Changing props

Hey guys ive got a 15hp mercury outboard and wanting to get more speed out of it,one of my mates mentioned getting a new prop with a higher pitch, which equals higher overall speed, just wanting to see if this is a good idea or a waste of time, if if uses more petrol and if anybody has put new props on to make their boat faster

Cheers Nick

generally the props are put on the motor for a reason. usually its because its the best for the unit. start changing things and you could either over rev the motor or put too much strain on it. then your looking at more $. best leaving it as it is imo

Can of worms

As Russ says, leave it alone. There can be lots of things that can change once you start messing with props.

Before you start try changing props, see how the weight is distributed around the boat to trim it out better also try adjusting the tilt angle to push the nose up or down a fraction. Check the prop for chips or dings and see how it lines up with the bottom of the hull, not too deep or too high will have an effect.

all the suggestions above

all the suggestions above are correct-assuming it was propped for the boat its on now.

Check with a mercury dealer how to prop it, Im not sure as it doesnt have a tacometer.

If youve just bought it, its possible (for example) that it was setup for a houseboat or yacth auxiliary in which case it would be too small a pitch.
