Chasing Mulloway turned into a bronzie
Submitted by Seek on Wed, 2012-02-22 16:03
Hey all, just started fishing seriously since last december. These are a few of my decent catches since December. Got a few good tailor of southern Perth beaches, the one in my right hand is a 49cm other is a 43cm. Last Saturday, seen a bloke pull up a 1.3m Mulloway(pictured above) at E-shed, I measured it for him. So the next night I decided to give it a shot. Put some new line on my reel 50lb braid. Hooked onto something big! Thought this was the moment I got my first Mulloway, turned out to be a big bronzie. Quite disappointed it wasn't a mulla but still lots of fun, always a good feeling when you have something heavy on your rod and it's kicking!

Whalers
Bronzies and spinners come from thf same family whalers. They all look pretty similar and very hard to distinguish with the clarity of that photo. Usually need to identify by teeth also

Teeth
Had lots of very small teeth, friend of mine said it was a bronzie. He could be wrong not entirely sure.

Common Blacktip Shark?
For what it is worth, I'll weigh in too. If you are still interested, your great little shark is probably not a Bronze Whaler. My best guess from the photo is that it is a Common Blacktip Shark Carcharhinus limbatus. They are mostly tropical, but are common down to Dunsborough too. However, it could also be a Spinner Shark Carcharhinus brevipinna.
In whaler sharks, there is so much confusion with IDs. Firstly, as rig says, they are so hard to be certain just from a photo - you really need the specimen, or a) excellent photos; b) teeth, c) sometimes xrays of the vertebrae! The one thing that I have noticed is that the name 'bronzie' gets given to almost any whaler, but I think that is because they are so hard to tell apart. The other problem is common names - 'blacktip' is part of the name of 3 species of whaler:
Common Blacktip Shark Carcharhinus limbatus
Blacktip Reef Shark Carcharhinus melanopterus
Australian Blacktip Shark Carcharhinus tilsoni
So, as spooled79 said 'we don't get blacktips in Perth' - correct if you are referring to the second 2 species, but falttymatty pointed out that we do - true also, we get the 'common blacktip'
While I'm here, (and I think others have mentioned it before) I'll also point out that the TRUE Bronze Whaler Charcharinus brachyurus is a southern species and only goes as far north as Geraldton. So, sharks at Shark Bay, Exmouth etc are not bronzies.
enough from me. Nice catch Seek!
