Cockburn Sound crab report

Hi Guys and Girls, just want to let you know the crab season started slowly for us this morning.

Nets in the water at 6am.

Started at Sulfur Bay 3 pulls crabs Zero

Back to Mengles 2 pulls crabs Zero

So over the side for a tow around and scraped up two just size blues

If we jumped in at 6am instead of drop netting probably would of got a few.

But looks a bit early ATM

Cheers

Trawling for GWs

Trawling for GWs is not my idea of how to start the day. Stay in the boat. (just joking)

In Coburn sound I would stay in the boat.

Mate when you say Zero, do you mean no crabs or no legal ones. Have been trying infront off the house in Bouvard. Scarse legals, but loads of just U/S blues.

Loads

Mon, 2013-12-16 17:44

Saw loads of undersize crabs just along the weedline along Palm Beach two weekends ago when snorkelling. I mean loads of them. I counted ten in around 1-2 minutes that were easily visible (ie not buried in the sand)

Looks good for later in the season, and will try throwing a couple of nets or scooping over the weekend.

Good luck to all.

Went out this morning,on the water by 5.30. Tried in close first around Mangles Bay- got two. Then tried along the Causeway- got three. So I think I will also be putting the nets away as well, until the New Year.

What I did see this morning was huge schools/swarms of blowies moving around the weed banks.

Did you go crabbing with your Ski? if so some info, pics of your rig would be greatly appreciated. Trying to work something out for my ski and the nets.

Went out in my mates boat on the swan and hit 3 big schools of Blowies, (6-10 in a net)

wish there was some use for them.

Blowies

Sat, 2014-01-18 13:56

Hi Psion
there is a use for blowies, crab bait cheap and you can get fresh bait at any time with a scoop net over the side. Blowies are absent at the moment over my way (falcon) I don't know why but when walking around in the water day or night they are conspicuous by their absence. Perhaps there is a blowy eating monster on the loose lol

It's been very poor start to the crabbing season this year around Mangles Bay/Sound.

This article was in the local newspaper last week about the crabs-interesting reading.

Pre 2009 Closure

Wed, 2014-01-29 21:31

Interesting read, it would be interesting to know what the pros thought of the divide concept as I'm sure that have a view on recreational pressure!

I didn't start crabbing until Christmas 2012 of which I've enjoyed a couple of good seasons. Can anyone recall if it was like this pre 2009 before the 3 year ban?  Is anyone aware whether the pros are up or down on their catch for this time of year?

Cheers

Perhaps the water temp isn't high enough yet to induce feeding activity!?

empty nets

Wed, 2014-03-12 09:04

Went out in the sound yesterday, Garden Island and the Causeway Wall, no crabs in the nets, only seen 1 crab in the weed.

I was told by a couple of divers at the ramp this has been a bad year in the sound, and Fisheries are going to close the sound to crabbing early.

I can feel a 3 year closure comming on!!!

We caught a dozen herring , so cant complain :)
