correct sounder settings and problems

Had a PM from another member thought I'd post the info I sent him as others may find it useful.

Info is specific to a Lowarance HDS but generally applies to all sounders

1.   Transducer is where most problems lie (I’ll stick to Transom Mounts), you need to make sure this is set up properly first.  Location and angle are where most problems are made.  The manual will show how this should be done better than I can.

In short though the centre line of the transducer (looking from behind) should be aligned with the bottom of the hull (at the point where the transducer is mounted).  On some hulls it can be slightly higher but not to the point that the bottom of the transducer is higher than the bottom of the hull.  It should not be angled forwards on backwards (you can get away with a tiny bit of forward tilt but not backwards.).

It needs to be where there is no turbulence (aerated water) coming off the hull (strakes, bumps, damage or repairs to the hull will cause turbulence) and at least one foot from the motor.  It your sounder works well in calm water when stationary but is a problem underway hang over the back whilst someone else is driving and check the transducer is running through clean water (green or blue as opposed to full of bubbles).

Mono hulls are easy to fit in this regards but cats are harder to find a good spot as turbulence comes out from between the hulls –

2.  Transducer cable should be run on the opposite side of the boat to electrical wiring and radio antenna cables (though these days they are shielded pretty well).

3.  On the transducer cable where it plugs into the back of the screen there is a sliver sticker with the transducer code you need to set this into the unit (in settings or setup somewhere) so it is set up for your specific transducer.

4. Push menu twice then select sonar then fishing mode  -  set it for the type of water your fishing and press enter (salt water up to 60 feet will be the shallow water setting otherwise use the deep water setting).

Turn fish ID off (this is a non negotiable – you will get to know your sounder better without it)

Manual settings will give the best returns.  Turn auto settings off.

Set your colour line to around 75%

Set sensitivity to 70%

Scroll speed - set to medium as a starter (can go higher depending on your boat speed – higher settings will show more detail (regardless of boat speed) but stay on screen for less time)

Set the depth range for the depth you are in + 2-5 metres (this depends on the depth variances where you are and you may need to adjust the extra to suit so you don’t have to adjust it every 2 minutes if in large variances of depth).  You can get your screen to show more detail by setting a top and bottom range such as only looking at the depths between 30-50m in 45 metres of water

Noise reduction – set to low

Ping speed set to around 10-15 (higher ping speed (pulse rate) at faster speeds if needed)

Surface clutter - set to low.

The above should settings should be generally right.  Now turn up the sensitivity until the screen is over cluttered and full of noise - Then slowly turn it back down until you just have a small amount of clutter mostly towards the surface. With some clutter towards the surface and just the odd spot here and there near the bottom your sounder should be set pretty well (when seeking fish in the mid to bottom ranges). - If looking for surface fish look over the side of the boat.

If you now go into shallower water you will need to adjust the sensitivity down if deeper adjust it up.  Also if you go into water (say a river or estuary) with more sediment you will need to turn it down and vise-versa when going back out into cleaner water

If getting too much clutter on your screen this is usually one of three things

Turbulence – if this is the problem it will be clear when stationary and worsen when underway.

Other two are  – your ping speed is too high or your sensitivity is too high – check both most likely sensitivity but too high a ping speed can have the same result.

Cheers Paul

Feel free to add what you use

Feel free to add what you use Jayden -

I just added structurescan to mine so haven't played with it much yet so I probably have a thing ot two to learn there.

I did note it was easy to find sand holes out to the sides on a very dim and cloudy day when otherwise you had to be right over them and even then they were still hard to see.  Can't wait to try it over some reefy areas I fish and see what it shows.

I think one of the complaints with structure scan is people find it hard to see fish on it (as they dont show as big arches etc). You need to keep in mind it should be used more to find the structure which should lead you to the fish rather than finding fish with it (hence its name).  That being said I did notice you could pick what part/side of the sand hole the fish were sitting on as well

Cheers

Paul

structure scan is a godsend

Thu, 2013-05-23 20:52

structure scan is a godsend hahaha especially on the yak when covering lots off ground takes time and effort...I can go in a straight line and look for snapper or structure such as drop offs or gravel mounds or wrecks up to 60 meters either side off me in 10 meters off water and also cohnt how many snapper are in the school im about to cast too :) fer ebough you can catch em without it but god its good if its setup right, you no how to use and you no what your looking at

hey jayden, if you don't mind me asking what type of structure scan do you have? I have a lowrance DSI unit and it would be interesting to see how you have yours set up

mines the propper lss 1 side

Thu, 2013-05-30 16:08

mines the propper lss 1 side scan conected to a hds 7 not down scan like yours although it does have it but I find it completly useless really.....only thing I would consider downsxan good for is if your looking for fish amongs a tree branch in a lake or river or something

I use the side scan feature the most to find snapper that are off to either side of the kayak

heres a screen shot showing two schools of pinkys to the right of the kayak roughly 3 meters and 10 meters away

HI Jayden,Agree the downscan

Thu, 2013-05-30 17:02

HI Jayden,

Agree the downscan is not much use - i just use the sidescan and normal 2d sounder.

What settings do you use on the sidescan - haven't had much of a play with it yet and I don't beleive you can adjust sensitivity  but wondering what other things you adjust to suit or is it just the colour pallette choice.

Cheers

yeo would be interested if

Thu, 2013-05-23 22:09

yeo would be interested if the silver tag with the code on the transducer cable is needed on Furuno gear aswell?

I've a Furuno 587 with a Furuno 1KW B164 Through Hull Tansducer.

Whilst i can read the sounder well, i do not know if I've got it setup correctly. I would have thought i would have got a much better picture with the 1KW. Also when the ocean is choppy i get a bit of interference unless going very slow.

I've also got a HDS7 combo device, and i plugged the 1KW Transducer into that, picture was much clearer.

Interference in the choppy

Fri, 2013-05-24 07:47

Interference in the choppy ocean is just turbulent water coming under the transducer or sometimes the transducer itself coming out of the water as it slops about.  Some hulls are worse than others - particularly cats as they tunnel air down the middle and the tunnel generally narrows towards the back.

Generally not much you can do about it though on a mates cat we moved the transducer to the outside of the transom/hull rather than the inside and got much better readings.  Before moving it I hung off the back and it was immediately aparent its origional position was in a "spa" given the amount of bubbles under it

may not have the silver sticker on other brand/aftermarket trannys but at a guess I'd say if you go into settings or setup somewhere you'll find something about setting tranny type.

Going to have to go out one day and just play around with the structure scan rather just turn it on and worry more about fishing.

Cheers

Yep hear what your saying,

Fri, 2013-05-24 09:00

Yep hear what your saying, the part that trumped me was the HDS-7 never got the interference, although i only used this twice before the cable for the Furuno was delivered.

The funny thing about the Furuno, was when i went through the menu to select the Transducer type, it only stated 200, 600 and 1KW, but nothing more specific. Obviously there are a few different transducers which can connect to a Furuno, so i was a bit suprised to find the options as generic as this.

My boat is a 26ft Fury CC, and i had the Transducer fitted by Scott Fury (the manufacturer) who fits the same puk transducer to all this boat now, except with different electronics, either Simrad or Northshore i believe. The transducer is fitted probably 1/3 the way up the boat and a littlew to the side. Given the weight of the boat, im suprised to get so much interference in sloppy conditions, given the transducer is located at the heaviest part of the boat (Down the back alongside the fuel tank)

Not familiar with the Fury

Fri, 2013-05-24 10:08

Not familiar with the Fury Bodie but assuming it has some type of strakes along the length this tends to channel any trapped air along down the hull whilst underway even till it gets to the lowest point.  Sloppy water with the bow bouncing around a bit tends to amplify the amount obviously.  Wouldn't imagine the location would make too much difference in this case (as far as moving it which would be too much of a hassle/next to impossible in your case anyway).

Difference in the clarity

Sat, 2013-05-25 08:34

Difference in the clarity when you hooked the same tranny up to the HDS Bodie may have been due to different settings on the unit itself.  May have had surface clutter or noise reduction set higher which gave the clearer reading.  You will probably find you can adjust similar settings on the furno at a guess.

Furuno transducer

Fri, 2013-05-24 19:38

Hey bodie I can confirm that furunos have a transducer model list which you choose from , I used the model number off the box as I had already fitted the unit and couldnt be bothered pulling it all apart to check the cable .

Cheers fishfish

Edit I just realized that I have a 627 and it doesn't use a 1kw ! Ha so please disregard the above ramblings ..

Cheers Jayden, With the range

Wed, 2013-07-17 15:32

Cheers Jayden,
With the range on auto do you find the bottom is 1/3rd the way up the screen if so try setting the depth range so the bottom moves lower (may pay to leave on auto if your in constantly changing depths as it a pain to constantly change).

Haven't had a chance to play with the structure scan as yet (haven't been fishing recently either work or crap weather).
what settings do you change for Structure scan (not sure you can change as much on S/Scan??

That was the impression I had

Wed, 2013-07-17 19:03

That was the impression I had Jayden that there wasn't much you could change, seemed to be working well the two times I managed to get out back in April.

Was on pretty basic bottom of weed with sand patches and on the dull day it was very handy to be able to spot sand holes out to the side as on days like that they are hard to find even when your directly on top of them.  I see it saving me wasted time looking for sand holes when targeting Kg's on those cloudy dark days and more time fishing for them.

I'll work it out - just a matter of having a play..  Can't wait till next April off to Smoky Bay (SA) for 10 days and can't wait to try it along the reefs and see more of what's down there.

Cheers
