Count the crays
Submitted by crano on Sat, 2016-11-19 10:18
Had a dive yesterday at a pretty good spot. It would be interesting to know how many crays are there. We took 16 and I think that would be less than 10 percent of what was there. We will now leave that spot alone till next season

Maate, that's nuts. I set it up to watch on our TV and that gave us some scope, it was unreal. Some of those cray were a fair size too.

Rope
It is tied to the boat at one end and the other is tied to one of us in case the anchor rope breaks. We don't like 20 mile swims.

that bought back good memories. Used to dive a spot in 40 metres out from Mandurah, spitting image of that except for all the kg`s hanging around

Well done.
I went out last year off of Bunbury and had a similar experience in 35m of water, the male jumbos were all sitting on top of the plate coral, easy picking for the 12mins of air time!

Found it while sounding about 10 years ago.We did not dive it until about 2 years after as believe it or not we did not think it looked that good on the sounder although did not have the best sounder in those days.
We put my home made drop camera down on it one day and saw heaps of whiskers and have been diving it ever since although we dont go there very often as besides the crays it is not the most interesting spot and have only ever shot one dhu there.
No accident finding it as I do countless hours of sounding every year.

Cheers Crano...35s a long
Cheers Crano...35s a long way for nothing so the camera make perfect sense, had a lot of hit miss myself over the year...more misses but always hoping for that one ledge.
Did see a short vid on a spot a guy found of Hillarys, same 35 meters very little show on sounder but full of small plate corals choc a block with jumbos...think he called it the supermarket.

Wow
But Crano it would be worth a second dive to see if it is a transient "settlement".
We once anchored up for lunch near Rotto between dives and the anchor was stuck. Free dived to see it settled in a hole in the platform reef. Trying to free it we discovered it was chockers with crays. Didn't even need a snare as it was easier to just grab them as it was stuffed and poor buggers had almost no room to move.
Went back twice to the "honey hole" for not one, so I suspect what we had then was a White run all settled in this hideaway spot, but as youngsters we were to excited to care with the bounty to worry whether they were reds or whites (in those days as poor Uni students didn't really care - a feed was a feed)
