Crabbing Question

Am going crabbing tomorrow morning but unfortunately won't be able to cook up a storm until Friday avo, so I was just wondering whats the best way to store and maintain the crabs so they remain in good condition overnight? Was thinking straight into an ice-slurry then into the freezer once at home?

Or is it best to cook them on the same day?

Cheers

I'd prefer not to freeze them if it's just overnight.
Id just keep in an Ice slurry until ready to cook.

Yep I agree DO NOT freeze them as the flesh turns mushy. Put them in the fridge.

 I sometimes clean my crabs

I sometimes clean my crabs at sea raw if I'm keeping for a couple of days before eating. You put them to sleep in a slurry and then spike them. Peel the shell off the same way and rinse in salt water.

You end up with a cleaned crab ready to cook, put in the fridge.

I'll keep them in the slurry until ready to clean and cook.

Another thing, does the ice slurry actually kill the crabs, or does it just stun them for the short period of time that they are frozen?

The ice slurry puts them into stasis

It does not kill them, but if the ice melts and the crabs are in the water they will drown and die.  We used to put all manner of crusteceans into the crisper of the fridge overnight then let them warm up and race them across the lino kitchen floor as kids. Definately had crabs wake up after 24 hours in stasis.

Thanks boys, yeah I thought the ice sort of paralysed them but didn't kill them.

Will keep them cold so they don't wake up again!
