Crabbing in the Sound

Cockburn sound is open for crabbing this summer after DPIRDs "updated scientific assessment"

So they have finally taken some notice of what those who know and understand the area have been saying for years, or was it just a timing thing?  Maybe they could look at "updating their science" used to determine the demersal ban as well.

ANyway, good news for those who want to chase a few blues this summer.

New bag limit.?

Wed, 2024-08-21 14:25

The limit for north of woodmans Point is, or was 10 per person. 20 a boat that has been the case for a while. It made the decisioneasy for me and many others not to fish the swan because 5 is just not enough. So be it. Now you can still take 20 crabs form the cockburn sound but you need 4 paid licenses. Who wins? Not the crabs. DIRPB. More license money.  Leave the bag limit alone! 10 per person 20 per boat! Why change it. The excuse they gave us for the river was it will become a trophy fisherie. Only time will tell. But if the catch rate is the same because there are 4 licences on board how dose it help.

new rules

Thu, 2024-08-22 09:19

".....Cockburn Sound will open under the same arrangements as the Swan River with a bag limit of five blue swimmer crabs per day and a boat limit of 20 per day (when four Recreational Fishing Boat Licence holders are on board).

These rules will also now apply to areas north of Carnac Island and Woodman Point to provide consistent arrangements between the Swan River and Cockburn Sound..."

There full of heavy metals any way due the the industries tha have been there for years. The refinery went through 30 tonne of anodes a year that where used in the heat exchangers. that stuff had to go some where , have a guess. Alcoa pumped pleny of acid out as well although they would deny it.

I think I'll stick to warnbro and mandurah.

I may be wrong though that

I may be wrong though that 'historic' stuff is more of an issue once the ground is disturbed (like dredging a harbour).

The mob I work for is right on the sound and does very regular water sampling and our enviros say the water quality is very good.

Yes it's a bad joke. This clearly the intent of DPIRB cut the bag limits across all recreational fishing.  They use the new reduced limit from the swan to pass it on in the other crab fisherie.  Bullshit point blank. The swan being a 3 month at best, crab season through the Xmas holidays get alot of attention,  but 5 crab limt is rich. So we as the public cop it, buy into helping make it a trophy fisherie,  but a boat can still take 20! Now out of know where they gives us use of Cockburn sound with a catch Reduction in all crabbing to 5 per reson WTF! We haven't aeen any consultation or scientific studies to justify this. Just cop it again. West Australian's are buy far the most over governed fishing, 4x4, hunting state. Any guess what's next. This is just my rant, bit fed up.  I've sent email's to DPIRB but nothing but sorry blah blah. We pay alot for these rights that were once free , I expect more.

On the Money

Hit the nail on the head Livewire!  Looks like the old, take it away then give it back at a far reduced limit is the modus operandi.  Seen it in the demersal restrictions over the years and now this. Next will be the huge swathes of area marked for conservation down south. They'll reduce by a bit (which will have been manufactured into the original plan) and then say "there you go we listened and reduced the area". Meanwhile the net outcome is the loss of a lot of places where you could go 4wding and fishing.
