Cray Surprise!

Took a drive back to Lancelin this afternoon to see if I could find my cray pots.  I left them there last Monday due to the 35 knot winds and 3.5 meter seas.  Last I saw them was on Sunday when hlokk and I repositioned them after pulling both pots empty and before going out fishing.  I was thinking if any crays were in the pots then the ocky would have fed on them by now for sure, or at least they would have found a way out by now.  Pulled the first pot and to my surprise there were 5 crays, 4 of them were 90mm.  Then located the second pot that has moved about 200 meters and there was another in that pot.  The only bait that was still in the pots were some fish head bones.  Has anyone ever heard of anything like this happening before?  Mind you i'm certainly not complaining.

Crays!

Sun, 2009-03-08 22:18

Crays stay in post for many reasons;

* They like the pot as a home!

* The pot smell/old bait bones etc is enough to get them in/keep em in!

* When the swell is up they like the safety of the pot!

It happens, a great unexpected reward thats for sure....good stuff!

at Nobby Head (north of Leeman) and I yelled out there's a cray pot in the water, Bob & son in law pulled it out and guess what a big cray in, so we had a fairly good craypot and one nice cray to take home, better also slip in yes we have cray licenses.  The cray pot must have been in the water a very long time full of barnacles and such.

Good haul Tony. Maybe it was

Good haul Tony. Maybe it was the bait swap, or maybe it just needed a bit more soaking, or a bit more time for the crays to hop aboard. Or maybe a wobby got stuck, died, then when you pulled the pots the crays were just finishing their meal, hehe.

I'm guessing by Ryans answer, crays arent really trapped in the pots that much, its more they cant easily get out when the pot gets pulled from the sea floor.
