Crayfish Pot Etiquette

Crayfish season is coming up and it'll be my first now I've got the boat
Would it be considered douchey to put pots between Garden Island & Carnac as it serves as a bit of a channel to get out to FFB & Beyond
Thoughts?

Recognised Channels
As far as I know, it is illegal to set craypots in a recognised channel or marked leading lines. Other than that it should be OK, but remember the more traffic going around your pots the more likely they will be cut-off or pulled. I put a wrap of lead around my rope between two knots to ensure any loose rope is dragged well under water....helps to avoid errant boats running over floating loose rope

If I could get over my irrational fear of Large 3.5M sharks I'd just scuba to get crays
Alas I don't see that happening

When I'm more confident with the boat i'll venture wider to drop them
Are you talking 40+ deep drops?
I'll probably start at the back of FFB where I can find some structure

Yeh plus 1 for over potting.

Your pots wouldnt last a day between the islands. They would get cut or caught in props so quickly. And you will probably find not too many crays there haha.
Get a bit further out on some not so known reefy ground otherwise you will get buckleys !

Yeah I did well around the 40's last season. Only had one rope cut but managed to find the pot. I saw a commericial guy dropping pots a couple weeks back right on top of 5 fathom in about 6-7m of water.

You What?
What is 'douchey', is your usage of the word douchey. I sincerely hope that you are not Australian.

drop them on the back edge of the ffb, just look on the sounder for some structure. You will have a lot more success than inbetween GI and carnac. If you really struggle to get any success PM me when the season starts

Reminds me from trip out on monday....Some idiot has put two pots just outside of the marker from peron......seriously?. Wouldn't be surprised if someone cuts their floats to be honest. Lots of boats go through there, not thinking and putting your pots in a recognised busy area only will end up in problems.
My adivce would be make an effort to find some decent structure and avoid heavy traffic areas.
