Dampier Trip Report - Brucesta & Giggsy

After 2 months of waiting, the weather gods finally played nice and allowed myself and a mate out for a fish. My goal was to get him onto a good fish as he didn't have much luck last time out so with the right weather we could head north and hit up the red grounds. We marked a spot on the way out for another time and headed to my trusted spot that always produces a few fish. Giggsy was using bait but wanted to try so SP's but this never happened in the end as it was a bit quiet, i told him to load up on bait and make it big, reds love it!

they do but he found a 39cm one instead, released and back to grow bigger. I stared with a Nitro elevator 4Oz jig head and a 7 inch Bullhead McArthy SP, it got nailed eventually but no hook up. I persisted a few more drifts but it was too quiet.

Changed to a demersal knife jig, a new thing for me and i was working hard to catch my first fish on one of these jigs, after 15 mins the rod loads up and we're on! a shark was lurking but he left my fish alone and boated a nice Rankin Cod.

A little while later i had another hit, but it was toothy and took the jig, i tied on another one, which was like a sardine and jigged away, i was retrieving it up and then i got another hit halfway up, it shot to the surface and a juvenile Black Marlin, all of 15kg worth tailed walked off with my line, the shitty split ring snapped and he got off, got the jig back and redid the assist hook with a new skirt, interesting to say the least, then on the next retrieve to the surface a Cobia followed it up, dropped it down and hooked up, short lived as he got me on my prop. no worries another $25 down the drain and 1 more jig. Poor old Giggsy wasn't having much luck as i loaded up on another good reefy, got him up and a nice Saddle-Tailed Seaperch.

The Sharks had followed us along the drift and Giggsy got the short straw and hooked one, he battled it like a champ and got it boatside before we cut him loose, time to move!

We left that spot in search of new ground, we went around for an hour and decided to head to the spot we marked earlier. BINGO! the sounder was showing life, i decided to change to bait as i was getting tired of lifting the jig

so it was all fair. my luck had run out as Giggsy sunk the hook into a nice trout and that saved my bacon i'm sure he will enjoy those fillets

Short time later he's on again and i had my doubts as it was surfacing away from the boat i was thinking small shark then in came a nice Cobia, making up for the smaller one i lost so 2 all in the end and another happy deckie!
