 That's where we were

Fri, 2015-11-20 16:33

That's where we were squidding today-  The Navy guys came over in there rib to tell us about the dead snapper floating on the surface.

Said there were heaps in the Naval water Bays-  SE Winds causing them to drift into that area.

Also said they had informed Fisheries.

Fri, 2015-11-20 17:15

Like the so called little spill that just about wiped out the scallops a few years ago.....made some of the bottom resemble a desert

aids

Fri, 2015-11-20 17:48

Musta been some dodgy charlie sheen pinky going around squirting some questionable reproductive juices and they all got hiv. Sad to see fish dying especially after such an awsome season. Dead fish is what you'd expect in the river not the ocean. Hope it gets sorted quick smart

Concerning

Fri, 2015-11-20 18:17

The reports are very concerning, and I hope the findings are linked to a natural event/cause.

I did quickly Google fish kills, and the majority are caused by depleted oxygen in the water. However, you would not think low oxygen levels in a water body such as the sound would be a factor?

Come on Fisheries

Fri, 2015-11-20 19:02

Ok DoF time to earn the pay, what is killing these prime fish in Cockburn Sound and possibly beyond.

A lot of people want answers ASAP and you have the resources (what a name to use for staff) lets see just how good the tech troopies are at problem solving.

Bloody isis

Fri, 2015-11-20 20:08

Now they have suicide fish too, pricks.

in all seriousness, hopefully it's not a spill of some kind, do fisheries read and contribute to this site or is it up to us to research their websites to find the answer? Would be great if they actually publicised their findings on here to keep us all informed.

We (F.W members) should all do just that

Fri, 2015-11-20 22:01

All concerned FW members should send an Email to DoF requesting just that, their results of an investigation into the deaths of these iconic fish should be published on vested parties web sites and in the local news papers.

Does anyone know if any of the local tv news people are aware of what has/is happening in the sound.

I haven't seen any news stories on the TV about it.

The testing lab is probably onto it.  If this happened like every one said yesterday, they have most likely got samples and sent it to their labs (not sure where they are). It's not like CSI where testing is done in a few hours/minutes.  Also need to factor in whether the labs are manned on the weekend/after hours. Testing for bacterial or viral causes can take several days.  Testing for environmental causes also may take a few days.  To gather all the facts is important, to do it correctly more so, to give the correct cause.  Unlike all the so called experts on here giving/posting their thoughts on the cause with no evidence based testing, we wish it was that simple.

How would you react if they said it was a natural occurrence due to cold water, then three days later they find out it was a result of a few bags of cyanide that fell off a boat.

We will all know soon, just give the scientists time to do their work diligently.

They are probably working on it.  Not every one works 5pm-9am, these testing facilities included.

Fish kill

Sat, 2015-11-21 08:45

The fish were fisrt discovered 4 days ago floating on the surface.

Water samples have been taken, and the local mussel farmer has been given the all clear to keep harvesting.

I am with  Howard George desal plant, or navy related in my opinion

Maybe someone

Sat, 2015-11-21 12:05

Could go and take samples of the water and send it off to get tested by an aquarium specialist or the likes of, just make out it's from your own salt water aquarium. Might get some info if there is going to be a cover up.

A silly question

Sat, 2015-11-21 17:38

You are after cray bait, you go out in Cockburn sound and net (dab net) a pile of these dead floating snapper to use as cray bait. Are they safe to use as cray bait.

Are you breaking any laws, the fish are dead, when they wash up on the beach they will create a smelly problem for the local council. As they float around it's possible Mr great white may snack on a couple, will he die, and can this "event" cause a mass die off of great white sharks if they get the word of an easy meal in the sound.

Oh the ramifications the ramifications.

Sorry guys, it's a bloody tragedy all joking aside.

Could take dead fish

Mon, 2015-11-23 08:15

Just not any thats one the demersal ban. How would you prove that you DIDNt catch them is the question. However if you saw dead herring/tailor/salmon/whiting I see no reason why you cant. Just stick whitin the designated bag limits.

However what caused it?

Heavy metal stays in the system forever and is passed on.

Cyanide competes with O2 in blood/water etc.

Other causes.

Could the cause be passed on to crays?

Are you willing to take the chance before the cause is known??

LOTS of Questions!!!

Mon, 2015-11-23 08:51

I'm going out now into Cockburn Sound( Southern End) will take pic's if any dead snapper floating around.

Have also got the mobile number to contact Fisheries, and I will bring back dead snapper. I don't have a problem explaining why I have dead snapper on board!

Exactly

Mon, 2015-11-23 14:46

Exactly I thought justice was those charging you with a crime had to have good, circumstantial evidence and the case had to proved beyond reasonable doubt for you to be convicted of a crime.
From the pics I have seen you can easily see that the fish have been dead for some time.
You ask a couple of good questions crasny 1 which need to be answered.
