Deep Drop Reel Choice - Shimano or Daiwa?

Looking at buying an electric reel shortly, I have always been a Shimano man, but in this case I can't seem to find much info on the shimano reels.

The reels I am looking at are:

Daiwa - Tanacom 1000
Daiwa - Seaborg Megatwin
Shimano - Plays 9000

I have used both the Daiwa's and they are nice reels. I would be happy with the Megatwin for sure, but I am just after any real world feed back on the Plays 9000.

Anyone used one, and are they as good as the Daiwa's?

Cheers

Craig

I havent used the Shimano, but I have a Megatwin 1000 and a Tanacom Bull 1000 and they are both good reels at a reasonable price

Plays 9000

Hi Bucko,

I use the shimano plays 9000, no drama they are great reels, I generally fish up to 400 metres. I would suggest shopping around as the price tends to vary a fair bit.

Yeh, I know what you mean about the prices.

Any comments as to better or worse than Tanacom / Megatwin?

Two Speed

We have been using the Daiwa Seaborg Megatwin 1000 electric reels for many years now out there in the super deep and rate them. The Daiwa Megatwin 1000MT holds plenty of braid and the two speed automatic gearbox setup is the best part ie when its under load either from a big fish or a heavy sinker/rig setup. That automatic two speed gear box preserves your motor so the reel lasts longer and yes as black gen said get an upgrade of the drag washers as the standard ones are average. We use carbontex which is far better/smoother and we also sell/install them for our customers.

Not tried

Hey Bucko,

I haven't tried the others so unfair to comment, I know Ryan really knows his stuff and the other guys comments are really valid.

Anybody doing deep drops has obviously spent the money to get quality equipment, in the end a matter of personal preferance, I would say have a good look in stores and also check prices, perhaps Ryan can do a special for members.

Good luck with whatever you choose, I have 700 metres of 80kg braid on my reels.

Bucko i recently had a deep drop ruby fish

We had both the 9000 shimano and the daiwa.  I preferrerd the shimano myself. It seemed to have more balls when loaded with fish, it was pulling double header 15 kg rubys from 370m much faster than the daiwa. The daiwa kept losing line with smaller fish on. Yes the drags were both set the same.

Definetly search around for a good deal tho, as a mate of mine just picked up a miya epoch combo for an absolute steal from overseas. He got his entire set up with everything down to rigs cheaper than you can get the reel itself at some shops.

Fuzz,

That's good info mate, thanks.

Was that the Plays 9000 or the Beastmaster 9000?

The Beastmaster is a fair bit more coin.

Cheers
