Deep freezer handles

 fishing legends.

I know lots of us take deep freezers on the longer trips away but how does everyone lift them when full?

im thinking of going to the local canvas shop and getting some straps stitched together to run underneath the freezer with some handles attached I’ll them run a ratchet strap around the freezer to hopefully keep the straps in place, any other ideas?

cheers legends!

I just rivetted handles on.

You know the folding type, cheap from Bunnings . I mean, if you are prepared to load it up and cart it around camping, it can't be too flash. Looks like yours is abit dented around the bottom anyway   Unless you are "camping" where you have full time 240v, you'll need to run a generator a lot. I got sick of that shit, and made my own, 12/240. 130 litres, works a treat, fan forced inside, will freeze fish down a lot quicker than a chest freezer.

And the handles I was talking about above are the type that is on this home-made one. Screw or pop-rivet to your home freezer, worked for us.

Geez that’s a job looks good. I was originally going to just screw handles to the side but I did a quick google and found that lots of copper pipes run around a freezer so decided not too. Yep mines just a fishing freezer and does run of a geny.

That was slapped together real quick

I had to get it finished before our Ningaloo trip one year, working in my R&R's. I cut  an old icebox down to size, only the lid was new material IIRC. Dometic have a website for mobile freezing--this is more aimed at permanent installations for biig boats, yachts, etc. You can mix and match components, based on their recommendations, then get an opinion on how efficient it will be, based on the ambient and degree of insulation you supply to them. They reckoned it would freeze 200L and chill 300, so i reckoned I was OK at around 130  Turn it to the warmest setting and it still freezes. That aluminium cover on the end is made up from an old 8 Knot M&H sign I had stashed behind my shed ( legally obtained, I used to sub to them as the Installation Manager up there ) and some hardware ali angle. That was the really slapdash part of it, always said I'd go back and do a better job when I had more time. Of course, it's still there.  It sits at the camp on a couple of prawn baskets to keep it out of the sand, and has a cover to keep the weather off.

yeah, you do need to be careful about screwing into the sides of freezers, as the refrigerant tubing  is running around in there--but they generally have it really close to the inner surface of the freezer, with the insulation on the outside, so, if you use the minimum length teks to get a bite (12mm?) you are pretty safe.

we always just half empty, lift then refill. takes all of about 5 mins and not sure why you'd task the risk screwing into it?!

freezers ime are better if

Tue, 2018-05-15 12:58

freezers ime are better if there moved at a minimum ,
on away trips
we used to put the freezer in the tandemm trailer on a piece of thick ply , then carpet, over that to help cushion the ride up north , once in trailer , fill it up , with meat, milk ice etc , then id strap it down tight , for the drive , leaving the cord tied onto the trailer frame rails in such away as it was easy to access , but not in the wind slipstream to flap about , left like this it could be plugged in if we had to stop overnight on the trip , but if left shut it would stay good for 12 hours or so with min issues once we arrived the trailer would be parked up under cover or shade ,close to house or campsite , extension was run from mains or genny and plugged in , then it never moved again until we took it out back at home , the contents where eaten down or swapped around as we stayed up on holiday , returning with less meat, milk ice , and more fish fillets packed in ,

this method allowed us to set it up a week ahead and pack it before we left backed in under the car port or shed roof , also if we arrived home at odd hours or tired we just backed it in and plugged it in again at home , then emptied it over the next few days or so

this worked well and was min effort ,no fuss , no rush and gave you time to pack and check what you really needed included and never lifted or moved a full freezer
