I like fresh fish, but i'm happy to wait the one extra minute to humanely kill it first before it gets fried. Theres some debate over whether fish actually feel pain, rather than just react to it, but i'd rather err on the side of caution.
The other way they do it is to pour boiling hot oil over it at the table. I think one friend had it pinapple cut and somehow folded or turned inside out so it opened up like when you cut a mango (then boiling oil to cook and then you pick off the 'lumps').
In Korea, theres a dish called sannakji, where you get served live octopus tentacles still writhing on a plate (and in your mouth and sticking to it). At least octopuses have a less centralised/developed nervous system though.

AGREED!
If I spent half as long fishing , as I do reading this bloody forum , I'd be twice the fisherman I am.

Not nice at all
Not nice at all was my first reaction but when you think about it using a fish as live bait is not a whole lot different. Not that I condone using live bait.

Whitebait
Have you ever tried to scale, behead and gut a whitebait before you cook it. You would starve before getting enough done for a feed.
One thing I would like to see is for the fish to splash boiling oil over the cook as a last dying act. Not in to cruelty , if you have to kill something make sure its as quick and humanely as possible.

I reckon they would die as
I reckon they would die as soon as they hit the oil. It doesn't take much heat to kill such a small fish but how do you humanely kill a whitebait without freezing it anyway?
Not that I eat them or anything.
In some parts of the world they skin animals while they are still alive, and then they are left to die which is pretty bad.

I agree it is inhumane to
I agree it is inhumane to scale it alive, but it was definitely dead before it hit the oil. They gutted the thing first.
When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:
n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or
n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.

Its a culture thing. What the chef is trying to demonstrate to the customer is the fish is alive and fresh.
People in Chinese resturants pay top dollar for fresh fish so this is done to show they didn't "swap" the fish out and replace it with a dead one.

, But that doesnt matter! I think that you should always try and imagine what you would feel like in the situation you are about to inflict on a living thing. That way you tend to do things with a touch of humaneness. (is there such a word?)
One aspect where I do something similar is Marron. I have always felt sticking them in the freezer is a long and cold way to die (or sleep as they say). I normally fold the tail and hold on to it, and dip the head in boiling water, getting the act over with quickly, and once this is done chuck them in. I dont ever just dump them in whole body and all. If they where asleep from cold what a rude awakening hitting boiling hot water.
I suppose we just have to do what we do as best we can and dispatch the catch as quickly as possible, hence Iki spiking is my prefered method.

Come to think off it
Fishing is a little bit off a bloodsport, with numerous photos of smiling faces and fish covered in blood etc. Still if the dispatch is fast this will never stop me fishing, and I certainly dont think fish is seakittens!!!!!!

So you think its humane stabbing / implailing and decapitating a fish? :)
For the record, i don't really agree with boiling a fish alive either but stabbing/knifing a fish to death is also pretty bad. eg spear fishing
I guess at the end of the day its all about social norms & what a culture accepts is normal & what is deemed permissible and "humane"

I think he is implying that
I think he is implying that the Iki Jimi method is more humane than boiling alive in hot oil.
If used correctly, the Iki spike to the brain is instant and effective, it's hardly " stabbing/knifing a fish to death "
Personally i have trouble using the Iki method on large Dhuies, so i go all Jack the Ripper on their throats and let them bleed in a kill tank, before putting them on ice. None of them have complained yet.

Got it in one
It is still killing something, but just with a method that is more humane. An Iki is pretty quick, but as you said harder on the bigger fish. Thats where a "Bat" comes into its own, and even after one whack over the brain area all fish are dead, even if they still go ballistic like tuna and mackies.
Then you can do the butchering/bleeding.

You open a whole new argument if you want to use spearfishing as an example kackles!! Unless you're a spearo I would leave it alone.
In agreement that this deep fry method is disgusting and that all should be done for a quick dispatch.
Unless we go vego we still gotta eat!!

Also seen this
deep frying of a live fish on a cooking show. The fish was taken from a fish tank then straight into the hot oil, the scales puffed up and the whole fish was put on a plate and put in front of judges, to have the best score of the poor gulping fish. It was a contest to see which cook did it the quickest and unfortunately how alive the fish was.
I find it a disgusting practice.
Old fart uses the iki method on all fish we catch, if you hit the correct spot on the brain especially a big dhuie, the tail will give one quick quiffer and the fish is dead, then he slits its throat. We drown all crays and crabs before dropping into boiling water.

Alternatives to,Spearfishing
Alternatives to,
Spearfishing - Use a fishing rod, its much funner!
Cooking a fish while it is alive - Kill it humanely before cooking it, either, banging the fish on the head with a heavy object or, putting it in an ice slushy.
Using live bait - Dead bait or lures.
Skinning live animals - Why would you skin an animal alive anyways?! Kill it humanely before doing anything that causes the animal stress or pain.

Spearfishing is without a doubt the best method of catching a feed of fish whilst doing minimal harm to other critters....dont care how much "funner" you want

Makes me want to punch
Makes me want to punch something.
A great percentage of these asian cultures are unbelievable with their treatment of most animals - no respect or compassion at all.
- Scale, gut, fry and eat a fish while it's still alive ? - no worries
- Kill a tiger because you think eating it's dick will give you special powers ? - bring it on.
The list of insane practices is long ........
And their idea of protection & conservation is non-existent ........... f#cking locusts.

my comment got deleted, dont blame them really! I cant stand cruelty to animals. And people who take more fish than they need and undersize. Gets me a little to wired up. Absolutely foul in my book.
