discarded rubbish

just wondering if anyone else has had any problems with discarded rubbish i.e. fishing line or plastic bags that has caused damage to your boat? .

i have just found out that a length of line had wraped around my prop shaft and in turn destroyed the seal which caused oil to leak out of the leg .caused gear box to run dry and striped the gears (stern drive) costing considerable $ to fix

On my first run in a brand

Thu, 2008-09-11 00:39

On my first run in a brand new 13 foot tinny 20 years ago i opened up the throttle to full speed in a short burst to see what the motor was like and hit a railway sleeper.

I never seen a prop spinning so fast at eye level before..

Not Good!

Thu, 2008-09-11 06:17

Not with my current boat, thank goodness!

But with my first boat, coming out of CPBA, many years ago, after just having my OB rebuilt, I sucked in a plastic bag and cooked the motor - it all happened so fast. In those days there was no engine management systems.

We always take care to stow any plastic bags (bait etc) and pieces of line.

Not nice Russ, but thanks

Not nice Russ, but thanks for the reminder...prop off this weekend.  I do it alteast every 10 trips as I too have had line (braid) around the prop shaft.

Most damage I've ever done is from hitting a submerged sea container at night - damaged me (bruised chest from hitting windscreen) and wrote of the motor.  So please tie ya sea containers downLaughing.

Cheers Pete

Good insurance

Thu, 2008-09-11 09:05

If you have good insurance and you cook a motor from sucking in rubbish or forgetting to take your flush ears off they will cover you.....

As far as line around the prop shaft, its a good idea to remove your prop on a regular schedule and check for line and re antisieze the shaft.

It was a VERY long time ago, but if I recall correctly, the insurance did cover it.

Always picking up plastic bags in the sound, had a mate, throw over plastic bag etc, well Bob read the riot act, got it all, wonder his mate is still talking to him, stripped paint off of him. We've seen so many pelicans at the club with fishing line around their legs, we have a lady (we call her the pelican lady) that comes and catches them fixes them up then releases them,

Plastic Bags

Thu, 2008-09-11 11:30

Is that still a general problem in the sound? Years ago when I fished in and through the sound I used to see tons of them . Are people neing more resonsible these days?  I hope so!

Fortunately, down here, I can very pleasingly say that I have not seen one plastic bag floating around.

My favourite hate is seeing those 6 pack straps in the water. They cause all soughts of grief!

Colin 2 even floating in the outer/inner harbour, then on public/club ramps, the Bosun picks up plastic bags, bait bags you name it every day, people just don't care, she's right mate they'll sink to the bottom,  I think the worst I've seen is the blue straps the crayfishermen use on their bait boxes, mainly in Leeman but everywhere as well, all over the beaches.  They are supposed to dump their rubbish in bins/skips provided by Council.

(Deep sigh), how foolish of me to think the broader boating public (both recs and pros) had, over time, started to develop a conscience! That sort of thing is just so unnecesary. Apart from the littering aspect, the damage to marine life is incalculable.

Hope the insurance comes through.
