Yearly

They are out there every year. Some more so than others depending on currents and temps.

PGFC puts FAD's in every year which are a good starting point too.

Search Mahi or dolphin fish on the site and you will find heaps of info

live bait

I reckon Live bait is the key to snagging a decent Dorado (Mahi Mahi or Dolphinfish)

we used herring a fair bit; usually snagged from Carnac Is when we used to leave from Woodman Point on the way out

you can catch them on lures, but I've seen more caught on live baits

as Tim said above, you can also find them if you see floating wood/logs/nets, or anything else which holds barnacles

 I've found i get best

Mon, 2017-11-06 19:02

I've found i get best results if i stay off the FAD about 50m and set a slow drift towrds the FADS and throw 40gm sinking stick baits at them. If they dont go for the stick baits, troll some richter jelly babes around the FAD. If you drive straight up to the fad and motor around it, it tends to spook them off the bite.

Last year me and mate were killing it with the stick baits, double hook up's on every drift. Then some peanut came steaming in load and proud straight over the fad and circled around it 10 times. After that they wouldn't touch anything....be prepared to drive to every FAD to find them.

I've found the best bait to get Dolli's is a speargun, jump in and rail a few.

I’ve always caught mine on a live herring, works when all else fails.

 Everyone has a different

Everyone has a different method - we have caught all of ours on pushers, mostly at the fads. Lucky enough to randomly find them bottom fishing at the back of rotto and snagged a couple that way too.

When fishing the fads need to get there early, before turkey's come and chop the schools up and spook them.
