just going off memory, but the 280 I think was sold at a time when Volvos biggest diesel was a 165hp, now the diesels on the sterndrives are up to 260 or so?
Unfortunately my experience (being an engineer and knowing a few guys who have them) is that they are not all that reliable at the best of times.
Two guys I know personally have had major failures of the 290's in the last 8 months requiring a complete replacement.
I also had a 290 on a small charter boat quite a few years back and it dropped unis on several occasions.
Point being it may not be a good idea fitting a unit with a lower hp rating?
What exactly are you wanting to do, fit the 280DP lower unit onto your 290 leg or replace the entire leg with a 280 onto the transom plate?
i could (and possibly) am wrong - but thought the 280's were rated up to around 250hp? - as they also ran the V8's through them, dont know much about the 290's but have heard the 280's with power trim and tilt were a pretty good unit?
As for the difference - am not sure - if you go onto link below and search under the volvo leg you are chasing you can get all the volvo leg exploded diagrams (and engines)
What i have is a older AD41B 200hp volvo with a 290 SP leg and wanting to change to a DP 280 or a DP 290. the cost of a 280 DP is a lot cheaper than the DP 290. replacing the entire unit as i need to change the transom plate anyway

Give a man a mask, and he'll show you his true face...
The older you get the more you realize that no one has a f++king clue what they're doing.
Everyone's just winging it.
