drag washers

Hey guys, heading up to steep point for a week soon and just wanna give my reels a clean up before i go. What im not sure about is when you have cleaned any dirt off the drag washers do you put anything on them e.g grease or oil before re-assembling them??? Cheers

I use the lightest, im mean lightest possible coating of a good drag grease. Has to be a proper drag grease but, dont use normal grease.

Depends what drag it

Depends what drag it is:

  • Carbon drag you can run dry or wet, dry has higher startup inertia and if the drag surface isnt smooth can become jerky, the wet version(Drag Grease) has lower startup inertia and is smoother but max drag is lower compared to dry. When applying drag grease cover the washers in the proper drag grease and then wipe off with a cloth, you know you have the right amount when the little holes are filled in on the washer.

  • Felts Drags uses oil and different thickness oil can affect the amount of drag on the reel, it is best to used what the factory used so it is to specs, to apply it dry off the felt with something absorbent and then drop few drops on the washer, very important you do not soak it in oil cause when the drag heats up it expands it will cause the drag to lock up.
