Tue, 2014-02-18 10:41

Also getting heaps of bulls too

Not surprising the amount of tigers, though we never used to see many of them in the nets , always on the hooks attached to the float lines.

The couple of makos are not a great surprise either, both near Eagle bay / Rocky Point with the area round Wright's Bank just north of Cape Naturaliste a well known hot spot for them

I'm not surprised to see the majority are Tigers

There's a lot around and they'll more easily take a dead bait (Garbage Disposal Units)

Is there any real benefit to culling that species though?

Grey nurses

Tue, 2014-02-18 10:46

WA has a real healthy population of grey nurse sharks unlike the eastern states. With a relative flat bottom and most of the reef systems reasonable well offshore this put the WA grey nurses out of reach of divers compared to over east where it occurs close to shore but with Commonwealth regulations, one rule covers all.

At times at Koks island off Carnarvon they can be a real pest, just grabbing hooked snapper and letting them go resulting in damaged fish where as the other sharks will bite them off.

agree-off the NW coast east

agree-off the NW coast east of Glomar Shoal is an area that had so many we had to move away.

Not sure if it was a seasonal thing or what though.

Tue, 2014-02-18 10:46

At least only 9 sharks in total were dead on the lines over the 2 weeks... Could have been a lot worse..

Is this the time of year down south that drum lines would be effective on whites though??

There are a lot of 2 -2.5m sharks caught.. Maybe time to upsize hooks in the metro area I think!! May help stop some of the smaller ones getting caught!

Gotta agree with seakem, but we all know it's the wrong time of the year for most whites. Sept/oct/nov the prime time for them.

Although I strongly agree with the control measures, I personally don't have any dramas with the tigers frequenting our waters. They're generally pretty docile.

Great whites can go f*&*# themselves but. Kill them all, and burn their carcasses so they can never be resurrected.

You could nearly bet that there won't be another season of drum lines.

They will come up with a lame excuse but the real reason will be political pressure from the electors giving their local pollies heaps.

Yeah

Tue, 2014-02-18 11:23

It's gonna be interesting to see what happens next. I hope they stick with the drum lines for a few years, to get some accurate results. There is no point stopping it now.

It will also be interesting to see the arguments if/when there is another attack, and whether the greenie cunce ark up about the drumlines not working. Hoping like a muther fooker that there isn't any more attacks, purely to shove it up the greens and protesters arses.

If they get a white you can bet they will stick pics and footage of it up everywhere to try to prove their case.

Makos seem to die very quickly when hooked on set lines, never found a live one in dozens that I've caught that way

It might just be me and language.

And I am all for drum lines but somehow the word "destroyed" sound to violent.

Perhaps the government could change that word to something less agro like dispatched, euthanised etc.

To me it feels like ammo for the green when you say destroyed?

When you start to doubt the intelligence of some people they open their mouths and confirm that they're not that smart and Col Barnett is a classic example. To me it seems he wants to kick sand in the face of the protesters just to show who's in control but in a democratic society it has it's short-comings.

Cost

Thu, 2014-02-20 09:43

Cheaper for the contractor down south than to run a Fisheries boat with twin diesels and 4 crew 7 days a week off the metro coast.

Also less people down there to take notice on what is being caught and photographed and to be sent to the media. Hopefully for him, out of sight equals out of mind.

GW, although you cant "take" a whaler shark and I think the Tiger's are in the category with a interdorsal fin lenght >700mm.

Not sure about commercial restriction. Perhaps Someone knows this.

A small GW sinking would be ammo for sure.
