Electric Brakes
Submitted by Mulie on Mon, 2016-12-12 13:10
Hi,
This isn't boating related, but I thought I'd use the collective brains of the FW members for advice.
I have bought my dad's old van off him and can't reverse it as the electric brakes lock on. He has never had dramas with the brakes and I am assuming it has something to do with my vehicle. I have an electric brake controller fitted.
Thanks in advance.
Stu

OK.... couple of questions
Is your vehicle and auto???? Are you riding the brake to control the speed in reverse?
On some contolers you can inhibit the brake for a few minutes to enable you to reverse.
Or you have a wiring fault..... the reverse light is activating the brakes.

Are the brakes over-ride?
Long time since I had electric brakes, but i seem to recall they worked on over-ride as well as having a manual controller. Which means that reversing will be just the same as braking, as the over ride senses to relative movement. Which is why you have to put the half-moon in when reversing a manual over ride braked trailer or it will lock every time ( if they are actually working properly) So do you just need to lock out the brakes when reversing?

Mate, had a similar issue on my van the other day, controller (Teckonsha) started doing wierd things, applying heaps of load in reverse, temporarily locking up brakes, but was going fine when going forward. Turns out a wire was pulled out of the plug, and was causing a short.
