electrician help needed please
Submitted by John the Pom on Mon, 2013-12-02 12:54
I'm trying to replace an external light.
The old light was the old style inside eg had four wires going into four 'holes' - red, black, earth and white (I'm assuming this is for the switch).
The new light only has three 'holes' to fit the the four wires, so the question is where does the white (switch) wire go?
Any help much appreciated as this is driving me nuts.
Cheers

yep
different type of combo sensor light by the sounds of it, just in case check one of the terminals should be marked as an earth if this is the case put the red and white together in the + terminal as cell said. If it doesnt have an earth terminal then maybe post a picture up of what you can see.
BTW always use a licenced electrician

As above. Red is a hard active. White is the switch wire which becomes active when the switch is on.

You guys will think I'm a bit silly here, BUT!
This is a public forum, and this sort of information given out and used could be dangerous. If there was an accident the legalities may come back to the forum owners.
I'll tell you a story, when living in SA in the country, my neighbour up the road decided to do some electrical work. That day his life ceased. Nobody new he was colour blind, and now the cables are not red, black & green, but brown, blue and green.
Sure communicate between your selves. That is fine, but not as a public discussion.
I have done much electrical work, I know the answer, but I am not putting it up. No I'm not an electrician either.

I'm more than capable of
I'm more than capable of distinguishing the colours of wires, have wired plenty of things up before and switch the mains off while doing it, I ain't a 5 year old mate.
I thought I'd get the electrician stuff (Rig ), but we're getting a few things done at the moment so if I can save a bit here and there I'll try.
Thanks for the answers and messages, don't worry I'll not be chasing you through the courts.

Let me write this a bit s-l-o-w-e-r for you.
I said this is a P-u-b-l-i-c forum, which means anyone can read it and use the information.
I did say c-o-m-u-i-c-a-t-e between your selves there's no problem.

If you're willing to take on
If you're willing to take on a job, then accept the risks. If anything happened to me no-one on here could be blamed, just as someone reading this couldn't blame anyone. It's their choice.
The childish remarks don't do you any good though.
