electrolysis

Having a smallish plate ali (5m razorline c/cab) I have started to get a bit of electrolysis around some fixings. I have started to put an andoe in my kill tank which is aways left m/t. What do you think?

Electolysis

Were is the problem,if its around fittings you have added, check that you have used only marine grade stainless steel, also it is worth using sticka flex marine type or similar as a natural barrier between the ali hull and whatever you have attached.do not use brass for any fittings, check the electrical wiring to make sure its not earthed on the hull.If you used pop rivets make sure that they are ali type of S/S, hope this helps, good luck jersey

Duralac

Pull your stainless fittings out and coat them in a product called duralac. it creates a barrier between the dissasimilar metals, stainless to aluminum. It is resonably expensive, messy and time consuming but prevents the problem

Hi Greg, how old is your boat?

I have a Razerline as well and am starting to experience similar issues. Fantastic hull however the pait work and finish leaves a bit to be desired.

Cheers Steve

Duralac's the go on

Tue, 2009-03-17 15:08

Duralac's the go on stainless fittings and as jersey said make sure everything is earthed back to the battery not through the hull. If ya use rivets try and get all ali ones if not, duralac the stainless ones.

GO BLUES.

Hey guy's you will find all Alloy boats

Wed, 2009-03-18 14:14

will develop electrolysis sooner or later, and it doesent allways happen around the fittings, the worst boat I have had for the problem was my trailcraft. The better the preperation is on the boat before painting will delay the amount of electrolysis happening.

When you are purchaseing a boat like Razerline, Trailcraft and most other plate alloy boats that are built to a price you will find that the paint preparation isnt up to the standard of say an AMM Hull that is made in QLD,they charge around 8k for a paint job.

A really big one is make sure your batteries have been turned off, So there's no power running through the boat while it sits in your driveway. Jarrad
