engine reccomendations?

hey guys.

despite the incoming ban, i am looking at potntially upgrading the boat to a carribean 2300, and will be wanting dual engines as spending more and more time remote and a long way off shore.

its been a while since i have been looking at engines and unfortunately missed the boat show as came down with the rona :/

was wondering what peoples current opinions are on best options/

my current rig has the 200hp merc and have been pretty happy, but if looking at the upgraded 350hp hull, then merc dont do a counter rotating so would end up heaps more expensive.

yamaha

look good, but havent had them before.  this helm master thing looks interesting.

just wondering if anyone has any opnions, good or bad, or any other suggestions/ cost isnt too much of a factor as as far as im concerned the negnes need to be reliable or its just not fun any more, esp as the kids will be coming out more now.

anyway, thanks heaps for any advice!

What do you mean by mercury

Thu, 2022-10-06 14:43

What do you mean by mercury don't do a counter rotating so it would be more expensive ? I have seen a few boats with twin mercs 200's that I assume would have one engine propeller turning the opposite way to counteract the torque ?  Or are you looking for single outboard with twin props like Suzuki's 350..

I do like the current merc's so that's how I would go.

i think it was the 175 that doesnt do it. so was told would have o tdo something with the gear box. dont think it was an issue with the 150, only if i wanted to go the upgraded hull and twin 175s. i also like the current mercs. just tossing up whetehr the extra hp is worth it or not.

Merc dont do a counter in

Thu, 2022-10-06 17:13

Merc dont do a counter in 175, but the 200 is only about $800 each extra.

I have 2 sitting ready for my boat.

The 175, 200 and 225 are the same engine and the price was +800 for 200 and plus another $2K? for the 225.

I went for the 200's

Go the 150's  I reckon max

Thu, 2022-10-06 20:32

Go the 150's  I reckon max horse power is overrated as you never run that hard in WA.  Well I don't anyway as it's always too rough.

If demersal fishing is (was) your thing I have to say that helm master system looks really cool, but I bet it's dear as poison. Love to have a spot lock !

the 150 Mercs are awesome engines with great history now.

Only downside if can call it that is no digital controls or joy stick control options.

just eltting you know, spoke

Mon, 2022-10-17 11:07

just eltting you know, spoke to the engine suppliers on the weekend, and apparently merc does now do a counter rotating engine in the 175hp range.

ended up gogin dual merc 175s as a bit lighter, and according to a few sources a bit quieter, seemt o have more torque etc. bit sad they dont have something like the helm master system, but that was gonna be a pretty big extra cost anyay!

after looking into it a bit, seems liek either merc or yamaha are a great choice, and prob a little bit comes down t personal preference and needs. dont think could go wrong with either really...

thanks for all the tips!

Helmmaster

Mon, 2022-10-17 14:04

Helmmaster sounds fantastic, I'm assuming the outboard 'jog's on the spot.

Cynic in me says it won't take long to hit the 100 hour service intervals if this is the case. $$$$

I've got a 175V6 Mercury, replaced a F150 Yamaha. Similar weight, shit load more grunt and about on par with fuel usage.

Beware of the spot lock. With all the gear changes the motor does wears out parts quite fast. I know of 1 person that found out the hard way on its first service from new
