Epirb position

Hey guys just recently bought a boat with my brother and went to all boats today and bought a epirb. Just wondering where the best suited place would be on the boat to mount the epirb. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Cheers Dave

I would say next to the steering wheel as u r the skipper and responsible for everyone else. And in an emergency u will most likely e behind the wheel trying to get out of harms way.

RST Booklet

I'd suggest you have a read of your RST booklet. My Epirb isn't mounted in my boat but in a waterproof container - reason being if your boat sinks the container will float to the surface and you'll then be able to activate it. Think through the process - unless you re wearing a thin PFD 1 you'll probably scambling to get jackets for your crew and self - the Epirb may be a second thought. It's actually a very good question - what is your emergency sequence (plan) if things do go seriously awry? I think its what suits each skipper - as long as you folllow the plan. JMO

Agree, for smaller boats have Epirb and similar safety gear in waterproof container/grab bag.

While we are on the subject, I have a friend who was in a boat some distance off the coast when it rolled & sank very quickly, they were very lucky as had no time to get any safety gear.  As a result of investigation he was discussing epirb's with Maratime Australia and they made a good observation.

"Older Epirbs have a location point accuracy generally to 5 Km while the newer Epirbs have accuracy to 50m.  To put that in contex it is like looking for someone in an area the size of Sydney Harbor vs' finding some one on Sydney Harbour Bridge".

Worth knowing which one you have and if it is worth upgrading

Good question and excellent answer Perry.  I don't have to have 1 but am seriously hoping to soon.

BCF have 20litre water containers

they are round (cylindrical) and have a circular screw on top.  I find they make a good container for all your safety gear other than PFDs.  There is a handle on the lid making it easy to attach a rope to.

I have mine mounted directly above my head, but for a smaller boat a floatation bag of some kind would be the go.
