Exmouth in April - is it too busy?
Submitted by mtchye on Mon, 2008-11-17 16:02
Gday fellas,
We're keen to give Exmouth a go in the week leading up to the Easter weekend - i think it's the 4th to 14th of April...
However I've been getting mixed views on how busy and crowded it is up there during those times. I know it isn't quite school holidays yet but I've been told the ramps and everything are just chockers even the week before.
What do you guys reckon? Is it still worth a go at that time or better to let the holiday periods go by?
Cheers
Vincent

LOL
Quiet you say. LOL! Get your accomodation soon Vince, unless your tenting. The end of town quietness is 3 days before Gamex, then its just sad. Just leave the Perthy attitudes at home and your sure to have a good time.

Sounds good
Looks like the second week of April will mean the first weekend packed with Gamex and the second with the Easter rush lol. I think I'll scratch that idea.
The fishwrecked comp week seems ideal, just after school holidays if I'm not mistaken?
The problem will be getting the leave I guess, but it sounds like a great idea!
Thanks for the help everyone

Exxy in April? Our annual
Exxy in April? Our annual trip has always been in July/August and are trying MarchApril/May for 2009! We are looking for the warmer weather next year and hopefully some different species that wanna come play with it!
I'm interested to see the Gamex tournament in action...what dates is it for 2009?
Now I'll say Hi to the forum and thought this would be a great thread to introduce myself!

gamex
The boys up there will correct me if I'm mistaken but I think gamex this year is the first week of April... Not sure where I heard this, and I've only been to Exmouth once myself, but April/May are apparently the best times up there?

bit later gamex
Yep, bit later than last year, which is good cause the season seems to be a bit behind this year and the warmer weather and currents haven't really hit yet. Hopefully in the next coupla weeks, will start getting the billfish gear out and do some reconnaisance. I will be working at the comp during gamex at the weigh ins every night, so feel free to come say g'day.

Adam, Keep an eye out for
Adam, Keep an eye out for Flat Chat II during 2009 and we'll meet up! Love the site and you certainly are the man in the know for our fave spot in WA! If the RnR plane dropped in at Exxy we'd be livin there NOW!
We are keen to try for a couple of those fancy painted crays you been posting teaser photos of! Never caught them before and have seen the empty shells/legs on the reef / beach up the top of the cape when we have been there on previous trips -so we know they are there... BUT not being a "diver" would like a hint where to try.
Do you "pot" for them or only dive up there?
We arent greedy just wanna get even just 1 just to say we've caught one! And not fussy either ...would love a feed of western rock lobbys if they are eaiser too!

no worries
No worries mate, I'll be doing the fish processing at the comp for fisheries so come over if I don't see you before then. Shouldn't be too hard to find you boys around in that rig.
As for crays, just free dive, no pots. Generally pretty shallow too, anywhere from .5m to 8m all around the cape and into the gulf. You'll be lucky to get reds around then, all the popular red spots will be pretty hammered, but most leave the painteds alone coz they dont know how to do them up properly (thanks Gull).
If you bump into me up here I'll point you in the right direction.
Cheers,
Adam
