Exmouth beach fishing in May

Hi all, I'm new to Fishwrecked.  My partner and i are going up to Exmouth for the first time at the start of May, and i am looking for some advice. Unfortunately due to funds I am not going to be able to rent a boat while I am in Exmouth, so I will be aiming at doing lots of land fishing, with the odd spearfish in between.

So what gear should I bring? I have lots of different set ups when it comes to rod and reels. What tackle? Should I use bait? Is there any point in balloon fishing?

Also what fish are about during this season? (sorry I sound like an amateur, but I would prefer to be 100% ready).  I would love to get onto some GT'S and gold spot travaly. And also catch some edible fish along the way. I am staying on the canals, and would also like to know if I am allowed to fish in there and what fish there are in there.

Thanks in advance for any help.

In the canals youll find mangrove jack, huge bream and big cod. Crush up a few mulies and have some fun ...

Plenty of good beach fishing late arvo or early morning around the corner of the cape . The beaches will hold spangos and emperor with a little burley , plenty of queenies around the flat reefs on high tides

Ive caught a few east of the mildura wreck(early morning ,low tide, stickbaits) , turn right at the mildura wreck carpark and walk over the dunes (take reef boots), ive found plenty of small ones at trisel access at high tide but they are only about 3kg. Navy pier at night (so you dont get caught) gets a few horses per year (usually poppers)

exmouth is great

Wed, 2017-04-05 09:14

the best thing is you can walk the beaches flicking lures and its pretty much just you with no one else around heres is a bit of advise on some land based up there

exmouth marina off the rocks at night produces huge squid just hold you head torch in one spot and you will see them come up to the light  also you can get queenys somtimes on high tide throwing lures around there.

sandy bay park up walk about 2kms to your right until you come to some reef great place for queenys and spangos  i found bait worked better here rather then lures

mildura wreck park at car park unless u got a 4wd  walk right for around 2-3kms you will find some rocky ledges thats oysters theres another oyster stacks in the park but its protected so go to this one here i would spen 1 hour before and after each tide throwing stickbaits around 90mm for pretty much everything and anything but have fun trying to stop the gts that swim through there at times.

and another spot which is one of my favorites is directly opposite lighthouse caravan park there is some rocky ledges to your left  this spot is crazxy when the fish are there same deal just throw stickbaits around 90mm with a quick retrieve

giant trevally arnt as common landbased anymore but they are still around.

try thrwoing big poppers around the naval jetty at night thers a yellow pole which means sancuary zone so stand at the right of the pole and cast as close to the jetty as you can .....bring a few poppers

other then that everywhere can be good and everywhere can be shit but i had the most luck just walking the beaches finding new spots for my self walking 4-5 kms up and down the streches of coast up there is normal and is well worth it.

good luck fishing

lo0ng if you break it up have lunch at carnarvon it breaks up the trip a little bit but i wouldnt drive at night and if you have a 4wd then just go into the national park look for a track heading towards the coast follow it and find some new spots you will have a ball also i reccomend going into the tackle world up there and chatting to those guys to see whats biting and where just make sure u buy a few lures off them first
