Exmouth or Esperance for Christmas?

The plan is to get away from the city for 2 weeks over christmas with my wife and 2 littles ones (will be 8months and bit over 2 yrs old) and possibly her mum and partner.. and maybe 2 brother in laws....

The 2 options are Exmouth or Esperance.  I was keen for Exmouth... but now I'm swaying towards Esperance as it's half the distance.. and not as hot.

Where would you go? (Given that the family will be in tow) Reasons for choice would be good too :) Also any recommendations of accomodation would be great... and boat hire!

I've been to both places before and they're both great so it's not a simple decision. Fishing will be on the cards for sure so both places have that going for them. I think the weather is one thing that'll be a factor with the family tho... hmmmmmmm.

Thanks for any help!

less heat, less driving, and most likely less chrissie crowding - ( theres more bull ants, mossies, sandflys  and blow flies in exmouth and a lot more kilometers to drive = more chance of blowing a tire or  hitting a roo etc

Esperance

Esperance for sure at that time of year, I would prefer to fish Exmouth but not at Chrissy time, the winds and heat can be extreme.

purely for the weather with young kids.   And hours less of   "are we there yet?"  ;-)

Esperance is looking more

Sun, 2010-03-07 21:49

Esperance is looking more likely for sure... Definately the cooler weather and less travel is a big pro... luckily the kids will be too young to ask if we're there yet tho.. but plently old enough to whinge none the less!

Any accomodation recommendations? Not camping so has to be cabin/unit type thing.. searching the net atm.

See if you can book a chalet

Sun, 2010-03-07 22:42

See if you can book a chalet for a couple of nights out at the Duke of Orleans Caravan park (90kms east), my mate Guy Royle owns it . Pretty busy that time of year but they have hire polycraft and its a good base also to work from out east to beach fish the likes of Poison Creek, Alexander Bay, Thomas river etc You bringing a 4WD??

As for in town accomodation, try the caravan parks for units/chalets....be the best value....not really sure, have never stayed there in paid accomodation....only lived there for 30 years!!!!

I know the beachfront units along the esplanade are nice but pretty exxie

honestly, i would be going to esperance if i was in your shoes, simply for the sake of the young kids as they wouldnt cope too good with the heat up in exxy . if you were on your own , thats a different story

Anyone thinking Exmouth?

Mon, 2010-03-08 12:09

Anyone thinking Exmouth? haha.. yeh Esperance would be better for the family.

Will look at the Duke of Orleans thanks woody. How big are the polycraft boats they hire? Will have a 4wd yes, definately planning to use it while down there and do some good landbased fishing!

Are there any bigger boats for hire down there that could get out deeper?

I'm pretty sure they are

I'm pretty sure they are only dinghys mate, wouldnt go out too far in them thats for sure. Duke Charters is the go out there too, they will put you onto some good bottom fish.

I think in town theres 5.5 metre polycraft for hire from either jetty motel or the holiday apartments next door to them....that would be more up your alley

Thanks for the advice and help guys... it's looking like Esperance is the go, now just to book somewhere. I think I found a 6m boat for hire from one of those places so I'll have to look into that some more. Might seek some more boat fishing advice closer to the date :)

Yeh will have to seek some

Wed, 2010-03-10 22:19

Yeh will have to seek some more info on the boat fishing around the area. Wanna have a look at a chart of the area, is there much depth out there around all the islands?

Hope to hire a boat unless I can commandeer some other boat :)
