They can give you a written
They can give you a written warning if it was a genuine and small mistake, like 1mm under.
Buttt unfortunalty i think they will ping ya! Not sure on the $$

fisheries
fisheries seem more interested in pinging blokes for making genuine mistakes , than going after the simon peterffys of the world , last time I spoke to fisheries they said they would wind up the peterffry investigation within 14 days I am counting the days down

Yeh mate don't doubt that, just making a point that they can not fine you and just warn you.

Karratha Backbeach? Saw them
Karratha Backbeach? Saw them there writing people up Sunday I think.
I was going to go out couple of weekends ago and for some reason thought I would check the date on mine on a Friday night. Out by a week or something like that and received the notice in the post couple of days later. Whats with that??? Imagine if they did that with car licenses, shitloads would be driving around without one.
Just so happened that I also thought I would check my oversize permit at the same time. Yeah it was out by 5 months...went nowhere that weekend :-0
Hope they dont sting ya too much.
Cheers

I spoke to a fisheries
I spoke to a fisheries officer who said the delays in sending out recreational renewals was due to fisheries management instructing admin staff to deal with only commercial licence stuff before christmas. You could write and ask fisheries to reconsider issueing the fine due to that?

Expired licence
I had the same thing happen a few years ago I got my squid confiscated and a $100 fine to boot.
Fisheries generally won't accept any excuses it is your responsibility to ensure your license is current as far as they are concerned

Same thing happened to my neighbour
Crabbing as he has done for many years (retired) and they checked his licence. Was expired. Infringement written.
They didnt confiscate his 10 crabs (all legal).
And 3 months down the track he is still waiting for the fine, so I suspect he was just "warned".
Hope the same happens with you.

Fisheries not sending out
Fisheries not sending out renewals is not a valid excuse In my opinion. People need to take responsibility not only for checking their license is valid but for a lot of other things in life.

The cost of prosecuting
The cost of prosecuting someone is wsy more expensive than what is gained through the fine. Prosecution is by no way a profitable business, unless you are a lawyer. Lawyers make money out of it...

I wonder
It would make sense to me to set up a direct debit system like insurances do etc i am sure alot of people would use it.
