FADS - 17-4-11

Hey all

first time poster!!

Headed out to the fads yesterday morning. Resulting in some dollies and tuna. nice morning, weather was disgusting with southerly screaming offshore.

- Frustrating when other boats ram the fads, in hope of getting hooked lures back, or hooking fish. Guys remember there is NO need to do this. The fish will come to your spread, or baits. getting to close to the fads just sound the fish, and then no ones happy

Water Temp out there is 25 degrees

Photos to come

sounds like you had a good time even tho the weather wasnt the best. why would anyone ram the fads to get a lure back, it could cause more damage than the lure is worth.

by the way. welcome aboard. looking forward to seeing the pics

Good to hear you got into

Good to hear you got into some fish.

As for poor FAD's behaviour, you do see a lot. What about the ones who keep the boat in gear and hover right on the FAD. The dollies are glued to the FAD. Its not even the best spot to catch them (nor the best method if you sound them down). Then theres the big game boats with giant reels and huge marlin lures that I rarely ever see hooked up. Least the good thing is that if they arent catching fish, theres more fish to catch :p Doesnt help when they sound them though. Deliberately ramming the FAD's isnt on though. Which FAD was it that got bent? I think the sole remaining Jurien FAD completely lost its ally top? (maybe it didnt have or or maybe i'm getting confused)

The Hillarys FAD doesn't look too good.

Mon, 2011-04-18 17:41

Someone took a fair hit to it a few weeks back. I also pulled up 10's of meters of braid from two of the FADs the other week through my lures. When it's broken off from the lures stuck on the actual FAD, the line floats away in the current. Not good for unexpecting outboards! Just a little respect would be good!

Winds

Mon, 2011-04-18 18:13

Well done on Dollies

We loaded up with live bait early yesterday, all ready for trip to the FADS, but you could tell the wind was not going to get any better, so we canned our run to the fads and chased Tuna and Mackies. Home with a nice SBT and a Mackie around 12 kg's. Fads over the Easter break hopefully.

 It was atrocious weather,

It was atrocious weather, and rather stupid if you ask me in regards to getting so close ot the FAD.

no fad got bent, but from what we could see, a lure was hooked to the chain or some sort, and they attempted or got it back, pulling up to the fad etc etc, in the weather we were in it could of damaged the boat so much! The FAD wasnt damaged as we were the last sole boat out there till around 11 am. Just annoyed me as the fish completely sounded. We werent there to catch some SBT or strippeys put it that way!

Rick - Yerh we left before it picked up at around 5 30 am,  as we ventured out it picked up, but we decided to commit to it,bearing in mind it is mother nature and always have that respect for the ocean. we got our fish then headed straight in. Well done on the mackie, was it around hillaries? Im real kean to get one but think its to late

I meant the dollies arent

I meant the dollies arent actually glued to the FAD itself. The way some people fish it makes you think they have it in their mind that the lure must be within a meter of the FAD chain to ever catch a fish. However, generally while fishing, you'll find the school holds in one area, 5, 10, 20m or more away from the FAD, not right on it anyways. Usually the fish right on the FAD are finicky anyways, while the ones patrolling around the FAD (but not scraping it) are more conductive to taking a lure/bait/fly/etc.

-Ive caught dollies on blind

Mon, 2011-04-18 19:15

-Ive caught dollies on blind strikes, with no structure what so ever

-We hooked one at least 20 - 25 m after passing the fad,We hooked one passing the fad around 10 m off it,We hooked the smallest fish off the day around 15 passed the fad, that was hiding under a clump of weed i think.

-When their feeding or worked up/free jumping there is no need to get real close to the fad.

- Yes you are right jo generally fish are around the fad, and if there on the bite there is no need to get close to the FAD.they will come to you, more then likely more then just one, that if you know how to spot them in the water, colours to look for etc etc.

- If there not on the bite, and you can see them close the fad there are techniques to hook these fish without sounding them.

Im agreeing with you both, there is no right or wrong answer.

Try switch baiting dollies with good old charlie the skipjack tuna.when its mill poind conditions Now that is a sight to see!
