First 4-stroke, what to look out for?

 Hi guys

Im going to look at a 15 foot ali centre console in the next few days with a 40hp Yammi 4 stroke (165hours). Ive never owned a 4 stroke before, is there anything in particular to look out for? or is it basically a case of check the oil, check the condition and service records? Im going to arrange a test run if the boat looks good but do you think a 40 will do the job on a boat that size?

yeh the 40 should do it

had a 15ft with a 40 on it. Don,t expect snap neck acceleration though. Look for the usual. Corrosion around the waterpump housing is common. If you want total peace of mind, take it somewhere and get an outboard mech to check it over. Might be a case of beer well spent.

Service history says it all -

Service history says it all - if he can show you the receipts all the better that way you can check if it has just been the routine servicing or if he was reporting any other issues.  If that's all good as above a test drive and a check over by a marine mech.

Gday bergerac. My crab tinnie

Mon, 2015-02-02 20:19

is 4.65 metre..about 15' and has a 40 yami 4 stroke tiller control. On the Swan in calm conditions 3 big guys averaging 100kg..100lt esky loaded with ice and a block..ten big crab nets..50ks Per/hour on the Elite 5 GPS..about 28 knots..plenty of get up and go and under normal operating conditions runs on the smell of it. Nothing would be wrong with that motor if it has truly clocked just 165Hrs. Just broken in. Take it for a Swan run just in case.

P.s my tinnie is not a plate boat it is a Quintrex and comes in at 365kg without motor. Hope this helps.

Cheers for your help guys, had a look at the boat today, the outboard looks like its pretty decent. The owner is claiming 25knots which is good enough for me but going to give it a test drive on the weekend.
