First SW Fishing Comp November

The first SW fishing comp will be held Saturday 7 November 2009.

The event will be centred at Port Geopgraph Marina.

The marina has excellent facilites for boats and allows for plenty of shore options. A Freshwater category will be included.

The rules will be simple and will be posted to all members that wish to participate (but already parrallel the Exmouth comp rules). We will PM them to you once you have paid.  We will decide on the best payment method  and edit the post later.

The cost of the comp will be $20 per adult and $10 children (< 16 years old). All fees will be recycled into PRIZES. We will also have a fishwrecked donation jar on the day.

The comp will be length only and you will need to use a brag mat or similar and a photo for proof. Individual name tags will be issued at the comp. The winner for each category will be based on the longest fish, not weight. The organisers reserve the right for final justification and all photos must be lodged on the day of the comp. Dont stress, plenty of people will have brag mats and cameras so if you dont then as long as you have your name tag it doesn't matter if you borrow the mat or camera (with permission). There are examples already posted on fishwrecked from the exi comp.

While this is primarily a sportfish comp supporting catch and release you are welcome to keep your lawful baglimit fish but we are not going to weigh them for the comp prizes.

We will start the comp at 6am and finish at 4pm. Plenty of time for the festivities........

Tags will only be dispensed and received at Port Geograph marina; but you can fish from wherever you like. But you must observe the start/finish time, so travel time is the responsibility of the individual.

We will post the species list/category prizes in the near future.

The event will be organised by myself and BJ (bluetonic). This is the first comp so no doubt there will be future modifications and happy to accept PM advice/queries.

Hope you all can attend. This is a social event so dont forget to have fun and a prime opportunity to meet fellow members.

You going to sit on your hands for the two months....?

There are options and dont forget the comp is as much a social interactive as fishing.

Target fish: sambos, skippy

Target fish: sambos, skippy and other pelagics

Allowed gear: Everything but bait Cool

It would be interesting to see exactly what the bans are. Obviously you cant keep any demersals, but not sure about targetting other things like sambos, or even catch and release?

im really not sure this site

Wed, 2009-09-23 19:23

im really not sure this site should be promoting targeting the 5 demersals during the ban ... even if it is catch and release ... sambo's and skippy are fine ... but knowing the death rate of released dhu's id not be fishing for them at all during the ban . . . this is just a personal opinion on how it wold be viewed from the general public .

I dont think theres any promotion of targetting the demersals. I doubt many people will be heading to the 40m's and bottom bashing anyways given the regs.

Would make sense only to have pelagics on the species list though.

Well mate,

Wed, 2009-09-23 20:23

I dont think anyone is promoting catching the V5. I guess its up to the individual as to what you want to target. If you think you can release these fish in good condition, why not have a go at em. I wont be breaking any laws and I sure as hell wont be feeling guilty about catching the V5 and releasing them. This might be a good opportunity to show other people who have not been exposed to releasing fish to survive, a chance to do so..

would love to commit

Wed, 2009-09-23 20:13

but I think I'm slated to be off-shore a fair bit across Novemeber, so cant be sure if I'll be in town or not......

But credit to the boys for getting the ball rolling, should be a sensibly run and enjoyable comp. I think most if not all of us on FW have the best interests of fishing and its sustainable future at heart........

We realise that we will be

Thu, 2009-09-24 17:25

We realise that we will be holding this comp. during a period that see's a two-month seasonal closure on the take of “high risk” demersal scalefish but that doesn't mean you can't catch and release these species. Personally I won't be aiming to catch these high risk dermersal species but should I jig one up and it is of a reasonable size, then I might decide to take a photo of it and then release it.

Damo and myself haven't had a chance to catch up and decide on the species list for the comp yet but now is a good time for members to make suggestions and we will try and cater for as many people as possible.

We decided on holding the Comp in November to at least allow us all a chance to get over the weather we've had of late and give us all better odds of getting on the water. Port Geograph Marina was also decided upon because it has excellent facilities and you can launch and fish north to Bunbury or south to Dunsborough and the Capes. Although it won't be compulsory to launch from there should you wish to tow your boat to another ramp. You only need to get your tag from here and finish here.

Should this comp be successful, there is no reason at all why the next one could be possibly from Mandurah or somewhere else similar. The whole idea is to get the ball rolling on a regular comp that sees us all have a fun day and meet each other.

Oh! seeing as we will be holding it from Busso, we are thinking of a "Best Squid" catergory. Just a thought...?

Good list. Squid is

Thu, 2009-09-24 21:51

Good list. Squid is certainly forgotten often, so probably a good inclusion.

Dont forget amberjacks and yellowtail kings. Maybe have a prize for a triple seriola catch.

A few others perhaps: tuna, bream, tarwhine, shark. Maybe unusual wrasse category, or just most unusual category.  Perhaps even a smallest sambo category, :p

The comp will not be targeting the V5

Thu, 2009-09-24 18:30

There is no mention of this in the thread. Currently there is no species list. But both BJ and I can attest to the fact that when one is posted there will be no V5 fish on the list. Feel free to compile a list as Callum has.

While there may be a ban on the V5,one is able to fish. It's a fishing comp and although the V5 ban will be in force, one can certainly catch and target other fish. The are a myriad of options and as stated in the thread, freshwater can be catered.

I for one will not be targeting any V5 species. I rarey take my bag limit home period. I'll have to be central to the marina during the comp so I will be targeting bream and tarwhine (of which will be two species).

The SW BBQ have provided a great forum for members to meet each other and as stated in a previous thread this is just a natural progresson.

At the end of the day we all agree that conservation of fish stokes are pivital to future fisheries.

If the comp offends anyone then we apologise in advance and we are more than happy to suspend it until further notice. Saying this however I see no real reason why fellow members cant gather socially to fish.

This comp will be a template for future fishwrecked comps in terms of rules and format. As stated previously the idea is to move around to different locations over time. The rules and format have come from the Exmouth comp (and Adam), as this was discussed on the original comp thread (not long ago). Once we have a few then future comps will roll out freely and smoothly, so anyone can organise them.

The idea is to fish sustainably and enjoyably; and not kill fish.

Once again it is not the intention of the comp to target V5 species.

Good work Damo & Co

Thu, 2009-09-24 20:44

its sad to see someone put in all the effort to arange something like this and then have people put it down. We all have the choice of what fish to target. I would think people would fish for those outside the high risk catogry. Its a fun day Right??

I think it was a legitimate

Thu, 2009-09-24 22:00

I think it was a legitimate concern, just a bit of confusion about intentions about what the competition would be promoting. I know damo and BJ would only run the comp if it was responsible, so I think it was just a bit of misunderstanding (on a point both groups agree on - that it has to be responsible). I dont think the comp will promote V5, and they wont be on the points list. Though, its up to the individual (or the law) if catch and release is acceptable or not. Obviously opinions will vary on that issue, but it doesnt have to do with the comp (as long as the comp isnt encouraging it, which it isnt)

Moving to a length based system and promoting catch and release is a good way to do it IMO. I'm sure if there are any concerns on the comp, that the concerns will be taken in.

. Would just like to clear

Mon, 2009-09-28 18:11

. Would just like to clear the air after receiving a pm about my comment it was not my intention to run the comp down in any way. I am not targeting demersal fish in any way during the ban this is my chose ,my bit for the future I am happy to dive and chase tuna and Macs ,and give the ground a rest ,to all the people on the forum going in the comp good luck hope it all goes well, whether you are targeting demersal fish intentionally or not some will be caught and some will not release, in a good state and will probable die, this is my opinion in no way am I having a dig .There are a few people I speak to who are going to keep fishing for demersals no matter what. Its they’re right they say, piss poor attitude if you ask me .anyways hope all goes well and will look forward to the results and pics
