Fish trap introduction
Submitted by carnarvonite on Tue, 2016-02-16 08:05
For those that want more info on fishtraps go to You Tube and type in Fish traps explosive decompression, either part 1 or part 2, this will give you a bit of an idea on why we are in opposition to the introduction of them in to the Gascoyne region.
Please send an email off to or to you local member of parliament voicing your opposition, the period ends on the 24th Feb so don't hesitate and do it now

Ok this is what I don't
Ok this is what I don't understand.
They know what happens when fish are raised to the surface from that depth, watching the first video would explain that.
So IMO, why didn't they cut the ropes on the second one & let the fish out at the bottom instead of raising it to the surface.
Or did they do it just to sensationalize the issue ???
Seems a waist of fish to die just for a short video.
I know a few years back there was a trap on the bottom just near the north end of the Muiron Islands.
The cable had broken & it was left there to do its damage for a long time.
I think someone eventually went down & cut holes in it for fish to escape.
IMO fish traps are indiscrimative and if the cable does break, it's too much work to retrieve it & they are just left there.
Cheers & Stay safe

Slow rise
I think they wanted to demonstrate that even with a slow ascent will kill the fish in the trap compared to winching them up at considerable speed leaving them with no chance at all of survival.

What the chances??
Whats the chances of finding not one, but two ghost fish traps in the wide ocean expanse...and with both their escape doors illegally tied shut. Sometimes you just get lucky.

Not Relevent
Whether they planted the traps or not isn't relevant, what it purports to show is what will happen is a trap is lost and what happens to the fish in one if this occurs.
You will also note that I think the divers and deck crew are Yanks if I am not mistaken so they must have the same problems over there with traps as we do here

Winching up a fish trap
Winching up a fish trap doesn't cause red emporer / norwest snapper to have explosive decompression, some fish also can swim in and out of the trap when they want on the bottom. The NT fisheries put a camera down on a trap and watched coral trout swim in and out. Don't get me wrong with the comments, traps are not great but they are better than some fishing practices. We like our prawns from Carnarvon and Exmouth but the bycatch of fish that die when the net comes up doesn't seem to bother people as much as other issues

Barotrauma doesn't bother
Barotrauma doesn't bother the Reds but the Sharks sure love them when they throw the undersize back in.
Does anyone know where the love of god goes, when the waves turn the minutes to hours?

Clearly you don't fish
Clearly you don't fish anywhere from shark bay to exmouth and couldn't give two shits about pro trap fisherman stripping the whole ocean
spoke with a mate in coral bay today who is a wet liner he said the traps is the dumbest thing he has heard and the north west tourism fishing industry will be fucked in a year
why trap goldys etc when u can get double the price for trout rankin baldies Reds and travel less distance
this WILL ruin the fishing we all know and love
I hope everyone has emailed the heck out of this and sent your emails to as many people as possible including politicians local members and the like
keep up the fight people

Well said mate, I'm glad
Well said mate, I'm glad someone has said it black and white. The gov clearly doesn't recognise the dollars being spread around the state with rec fishing. Once again pandering to a small industry that should be inovative not taking the easy road.
Love the West!
