Fish trapping for Snapper

Heard a rumour from a good source that fisheries are considering allowing the wetliners with snapper concessions to go trapping pink snapper again.

When it was first introduced many years ago it was open slather, with heaps of boats filling up each trip out. Now there is a limited number of vessels and a total tonnage for each year, once a boat has reached its limit they have to stop fishing. Trapping will also lessen the number of fish taken by sharks as they are reeled in and with narrow gaps on the traps preventing them getting inside and enjoying a free feed.

probably a good idea given the shark situation, though the quality drops a bit as well

problem

That is my major worry, you snap one off and it continues to keep catching until the fish work out how to get out, like crays, once one finds out how the rest follow

Can't say I'm very keen about that idea. Trapping is most effective when they fish are schooling up to sporn ect. Can't be good for our fishery long term.

Fish Trapping

I remember a few years back there was a trap stuck in the reef just west of the north Murion island. Locals were contemplting cutting large holes in the sides to let fish out. Like Carnarvonite says, they just keep on attracting fish because of the ones that die in there, (burley).

I think i would rather see them re-introduce shark fishing up there for a limited time just to reduce the numbers, not for fisherman but to increase fish stocks for the future.

If every fisherman waits untill they lose three fish to sharks before they move, then the numbers add up pretty quick.

My thoughts.

cheers Rob
