Fisheries checking catch

Spent a great weekend in Herring Bay at Garden Island. Was chatting to one of the old-timers and apparently Fisheries came through during the week when there were only a few regulars in the bay. Got one bloke for 2 undersize silver bream in his cray pots - $100 fine. Pretty silly as herring are easy to catch and probably better bait. I was surprised that they went to those lengths but rules are rules.

There was one bloke on the island that had crays in a keeper pot who waited them out on the beach. He basically lives there and would never take undersize or break the rules in any way but how can you prove that the crays in your keeper pot were legitimately caught over a period of time? What are the rules around that?

Southern cray

Tue, 2022-03-08 19:52

Got checked on Sunday  by fisheries , had to find licence in wallet and ended up dropping cards everywhere so gave up and grabbed missus card from in boat to prove we had one for the one cray, then the fun started.

His guage was about as useful as an ashtray on a motorbike, there wasn't enough curve in it to allow for the carapace to fit under so we used my homemade one with a gap of 100mm , 1.5mm over the minimum size then check his guage against mine, all good. He admitted it was the first time he had measured a southern cray.

Funnily enough we had only been talking about being inspected on the way in as I got checked by DoT couple of days before and had to produce RST for the first ever time since they came out about 20 odd years ago

I was waiting for that Frosty! Funnily enough I was a devoted beer and bourbon man when I became an Eagles fan. I've just become refined with age

I know you're a Castelli drinker Andy, but give Ferngrove a crack if you haven't yet. Their Orchid Diamond chardonnay is brilliant!
