Fisheries at Two Rocks Today

Well its good to see fisheries are cracking down on pot theft ( Well at least trying), They were at two rock today checking everyone. Whilst we were there they a couple of boats were in a bit of trouble to say the least with gear on board that wasn't theirs and guys without licences. I would have to say this season has been trouble free so far for us with no pots "Missing" or being pulled. Makes for a pleasant change.

There is plenty off them about [Fisheries]

Sun, 2014-11-16 23:15

Compliments of our fees and such.. You would hope this becomes a very regular event all along our boat ramps. But unlikely. Just carn't seem to get up early enough  I have given up on them and don't give a toss what time or when they roll up and will be telling them as much if and when they jump on my boat. Its because of them and their lack of surveillance I have had to take matters in my own hands and spend $ that I shouldn't have had too.

Our pots going in around the 27th. I have decided to spent nearly 2k odd to help make them near impossible to pull by the thieving arse wipes. [ Winch and tipper on boat...pots that will go at least 50kg plus hand  burning  6mm HD rope. That should f*ck'em. Also are now able to have big floats so guys that pay little attention to where they going just might be able to see the f*cking things.

Anyhow good luck to all you honest gentlemen out there doing the right thing. May your pots overflow with roachs.

 I think you are directing

Mon, 2014-11-17 05:33

I think you are directing your anger at the wrong people OW.  It's not Fisheries fault that there are people out there stealing pots.  It's the fault of the people stealing the pots.  I understand your frustration, I have lost one this season, but I don't blame that on Fisheries.

Agreed.. its not fisheries fault that people are

Mon, 2014-11-17 07:43

up to no good but its their job to stop them. We all know a bit of stelth surveillance work would stop this shit in its tracks. Easy to do..just requires a bit of work..something they are no use to. A relitive of mine is a fisheries officer and I can tell you they do F all most of the time. Don't care anymore cause i have spent the money and fixed the problem. Sorry to hear you had your pot nicked Randall but you will have to except this as normal out there on the high seas and it will continue as it has always been like this for as long as i can remember.

 Investigating cray pot theft

Mon, 2014-11-17 10:07

Investigating cray pot theft isn't a fisheries responsibility, it is a police responsibility.  Fisheries administer the fisheries legislation that makes it an offence to pull someone else's pots.  But to pull a pot and take it away is theft under the criminal code, and therefore a police matter.  Technical I know.  But I think you woukd find that if fisheries officers found evidence of theft of the pots, they would be calling in the police to charge the offenders.

Mon, 2014-11-17 16:39

Not entirely.  It's very much based on the culprits intentions.  If he significantly moves it's location and or changes the gear id, his intention is most likely to deprive the rightful owner of it and hence it would be stealing.  If he just takes the cray and puts the pot back, he is probably only stealing the crays, not the pots

Mon, 2014-11-17 09:33

it would be impossible to hand pull a pot with 6mm rope. 10mm is bad enough so thats what i run as it still holds when you get a snagged pot and need to drag it out from under the ledge

+1 - even came to Monkey Mia

Mon, 2014-11-17 11:26

+1 - even came to Monkey Mia and walked along the shore educating and checking. Was interested in one of the large whiting we caught and measured it etc. Might have been a big one or something, or perhaps something to do with research.

But 2 very nice Fisheries Officers for sure.

Mon, 2014-11-17 12:01

That's not uncommon.  We go to monkey mia every year and get checked once or twice each trip, both at the ramp and at the filleting tables on the beach.  They are particularly noticeable approaching the close of pink snapper season and reminding people of the impending closure.  Same officers also get out to Steep Point and walk the length of Shelter Bay.

Both very polite and professional and a credit to their agency.

Couldn't agree more

Mon, 2014-11-17 12:15

I do like seeing them. But also some german backpackers had been fishing further along the Denham side off the beach and caught a Long tom (yuk) and 2 way undersize Tropical snapper. I nicely told them that the 2 where undersize as they checked out our whiting catch, and advised them about eating Mr Longus Thomas. But then the Fisheries got them further down the beach. I thought Uh Oh, theyre busted but the undersize where conviscated, and they were just formally educated regarding the rules. Discretion there.

Spoke to the fisheries guys that day

Mon, 2014-11-17 12:33

As we were waiting quite a while for the two boats in front !

First one pulling pots for his mate.

Second one, 3 onboard, two without licences !

Pulling your mates pots for him and bringing them in is not a good idea, maybe even an expensive one !

Cheers mate

Thought it would have to be strong as you are adding extra weight in the pot and then thin ropbe. Hence I thought it might have been spektra etc.
