Fishing / camping Walpole?

Thinking of a week in Walpole after New Year.  I understand there are two caravan parks, Rest Point and Coalmine Beach?  Which is best for a powered site and access to fishing areas by boat?  Anything special to fish for at that time of the year?  I have read some books and mags, KGW, skippy, herring, bream, flathead inside?  Outside?  Will there be any tuna about at that time of the year for trolling or should I think about bottom bouncing or jigging?  What is the wind and the river mouth like during January?

Nornalup Inlet/Walpole

Randall, you've picked a good time as summer is better fishing and the water is clean with more fish activity.

Coalmine is good and nice and close to the fishing spots and boat ramp. Coalmine good for landbase and boat stuff. The shallows on a rising tide produce fish and so do the rocky island and river mouths.

Blackbream, flathead and yellowfin whitting are some of the main fish but around the rocks, islands and mouth area you can get skippy & herring etc. The Frankland & Deep River do produce blackbream but the Nornalup inlet has it all including giant herring in the shallow warm waters.

Take care at the mouth area and outside you can get some great KG, sambos, harlequin and skippy etc

If the wind is kind then head out offshore for jigging/bottom stuff but if the winds up then stay inside which normally gets the fish fired up.

Take plenty of SP & hardbody lures for the Inlet and bait, jigs and SP for offshore.

Cheers, I would only attempt the river mouth on a good day and only after watching it for a while and maybe after a few others have headed out (to watch their course through the mouth).  It may be the case that I don't get out deep at all.  are the blowies a problem in the inlet like they are in mandurah?

Thats the best thing, no blowies to annoy you and your SP's are safe.

 Magic part of the south

Magic part of the south wherever you choose to stay. Personally I'd go to rest point as its just a sweet spot with an awesome outlook. Pray the Easterlies are quiet and a fishing you will do!

Better book now or very

Better book now or very soon.

Rest Point is fully booked out already for the first two weeks after New Years. We will be there for two weeks from after Boxing day.

Either place is awesome and the inlets give you heaps of options if the conditions don't allow you to get offshore. Coalmine would be a little closer to the mouth but only by about half a km, though you are restricted to 8 knots in the Walpole inlet.

You would also want to watch people navigate the channel to the mouth or follow someone and take it slow.

I am happy to show you the way, PM me and I can give you my details and more info.

Wade - what boat do you have again, I'll keep an eye out for you on the water.

I love the place, have been visiting for 40 odd years. I personaly prefer Rest Point, great spot. As for fishing the inlet produces nearly all the time but my preference is to head offshore. Check out some of my reports over the years to see what you can get down there. If you want any more info, mud maps of the mouth etc drop me a PM
