fishing comps

we'd caught a few good fish and as per normal I leave them in the esky to fillet in the morning when the tables arnt busy, filleting away the next morning an old guy rocks up and puts a 30kg + GT on the table,i was gobsmacked he then told me that it was caught in the comp and the person that caught it was throwing it in the bin so he said he would take it for pet food and bait so good on him for that.GT popping is some of the best fishing you can do and a hard fighting fish like that deserves better, denham is home for me and that's pisspoor conduct.

its up to the comp runner /

its up to the comp runner / organiser to restrict the comp to certain fish.

ive seen first hand a spear comp change the rules to remove sambos plus other fish that are slow growers from the comp. GOOD ON THEM

agree with you, some comps need to change there ways.

No, its up to the individuals

No, its up to the individuals to do the right thing. People have to take responsibility for their own actions, not pass the blame onto others or to 'Blame the rules'.

if there is a prize for it

if there is a prize for it then people will try to win it, pretty simple really eliminate the weigh in for certain catch and release species.

Your still passing the blame

Your still passing the blame onto the organisers, not the individual. Get the prize and use the shit eating fish for burley at a later date or dog food etc. Absolutely nothing wrong with that at all, it all gets used.

Totally agree with changing of ways

I thought the days of people who should know better dumping good fish at the local tip or bin where long gone, it appears not. This sort of behaviour is just not on.

If you have no reason to keep the fish, then don't.

If it can't be revived (after a good try) when you get back to base give it to someone who can put it to use even if it's burly at least it's being used.

happened here few years ago in classic and when fisheries were told people were advised that they would be charged for dumping fish at tip!

If you catchit eat it or put it back pretty simple!

We have catch n release here now for the boaties. Take a photo measure andif released certain amount of points are alloted for released fish. Best way!

Carnarfin

Sat, 2015-05-23 16:37

Lot of bad feeling around town each year when the Carnarfin comp is on. Boats allowed to stay out for as long as they want and only come in for the daily weigh in if they have something that could go close to the daily or total comp weight for that specie.

The nights before weigh in results are radioed out each morning and tales of boats upsizing their fish are not uncommon with the smaller dead fish thrown overboard to feed the sharks.[there are more than enough sharks now without feeding the bastards]

There is a 50nm limit from Carnarvon which equates to half way across the passage between Dirk Hartog and Bernier islands yet quite a few of them overnight in Turtle Bay, outside of the limit so who is to police it or are they just relying on the honesty of the skipper.

Comps

I've fished comps my whole life. My dad taught me when I was real young if we aren't useing it we arnt keeping it.. Our club has set species so nothing really crap is aloud to be weighed but as far as I'm concerned it's not hard to get some sort of use out of all fish.. If not agreed throw it back..

I don't think it's only comps but also. I've seen people at exmouth rock up to the fillet table and be told the fish they caught is crap so straight in the bin it goes.  Not right I know but that's people for ya.

Unfortuately I don't think it will ever change.
