Wind will usually be a problem so a rod with some length to it for salmon a good bet. I had some luch at a place called salmon beach not far out of town. I went star sinker and mulie bait for salmon up to 6 kg.
Main jetty good for all jetty type fish, herring skippy etc and squid the most sought after usually with a spiked herring under a float is the choice of the locals.
Best catch was the coffee from the van at the end of the jetty - koffee kat - delicious.
Favourite place to visit and fish is cape le grand - 50 km east of Esperance but so beautiful. Caught a small salmon from the rocks at lucky bay there.
Duke of Orleans is nice and is about 100 km east of Esperance with some good deep water rock fishing and both Duke and Esperance have charter boats with red snapper most likely to catch.
G'day mate Espy is my home town, you will always get a good feed of squid off the town Jetty along with the occasional Bonito, Small hammers at night, and your usual bread butter fish. just out of town is Bandy Creek boat harbour where you can pick up the occasion King george and sand whiting, all of this is light gear.
For beaches the use of a whale clubn stick is preffered (10ft plus)and mullies, for close to town (along tourist loop), Slamon beach can be good for salmon and Bull Herring and if you drive a couple km past you will come to Fourth beach there are some great holes that develope where Gummys, Mulloway and large Salmon make appearances also nice flathead, If you go to the tourist beach Twilight there is a rock on the right which salmon are common- flicking lures is the best fun on light gear here also out front of the Tea rooms believe it or not you can get some nice KGW (Taylor street jetty).
If your able to get out of town a bit just out past the rock at Wylie bay can have some nice holes (4wd a must), also out around Lucky Bay can produce large Mulloway.
There are to many spots to choose from basically anywhere there is water have a go best to grab a local map look for Rositer Beach (cliffs), also Poison Creek, Stockyards (some of my favourites).
Also if your in the mood for some good Bream action try Windabout Lakes (opposite Newtown Footy Oval)
The Drives along the beaches alone are worth the trecking
