"Salmon reach sexual maturity at 54cm"?

Can someone please enlighten me? Minimum size limit is 30cm, and I thought the whole point of minimum size limits was to prevent the taking of fish before they were old/large enough to reproduce?

There's plenty exceptions to that if I remember correctly, for example I'm pretty sure mulloway mature around 70cm yet the size is still 50. Happy to be corrected if I'm wrong.

Yup and a major issue in SA with KGW

Which is why over there they are now scarce .........we complain about bag limits and minimum sizes yet our fishery is going from strength to strength .....

Strength to strength?

By allowing fishers to take salmon 24cm (which most likely means at least a year of growth) before they're mature enough to produce more salmon?

Maybe this guy Curtis has it wrong...I can only guess that fisheries has done proper research and the salmon reproduce at a much smaller size. Except we know that they come up the coast annually to spawn, and most of us are pretty certain that these are all adult fish of at least five or six kilos.
