Fishing sunday 26th

Well after a lumpy ride out and a wet face.we got to the first spot plenty of fish on the sounder .we hooked up stright away small dhuie .this dhuie must like the ride to the top as it has been caught on the same spot three times now.we tagged it a few weeks back. still in good condition  36m. Back down till the next time .Then a big run and a good fish only to have it snap the braid at the eye of the rod after 3minutes of fight. bloody pots were a pain as every bit of ground has a pot on it making fishing hard work .No big dhuies today but plenty of small ones to 6kg.headed home at lunch time just as the wind dropped,Days catch 11 dhuies 1 kept 10 tagged,2 sambos released ,2 snapper released,2 baldies Kept  1 big break sea released.even got a couple of pics for the photo comp  .Home to watch the end of the footall go the eagles.

Another productive day Paul.

Another productive day Paul.  Well done.  How come you let the BlackArse go?  I reckon they're better eating than Baldies.  Mind you, you probably don't have much of a problem when it comes to fish supplies in the freezer.

The Eagles game was good to watch.  They are playing really well ATM.

Nice work as usual Paul.

Was bloody messy out there today. We were out about 30 odd kms and it took forever to get back in. Seemed worse at lunch time for the run in.

Paul,

Is anybody allowed to tag a fish? and how do you tag them?  Quite interesting.  Whats the procedure and what is your purpose for tagging?

Thanks

Sorry no not anyone can go putting tags into fish . We carefully collect the info and log it all and submit it to ANSA . what is the purpose see there movements and growth rate and hopefully get a little more idea on survival rates of released fish.

amazing to hear you catch

Sun, 2011-06-26 21:47

amazing to hear you catch that same dhuie 3 times. Testament to your fish handling, is it one you vented or simply dropped over the side?

Sounds like a good day on the water

Hi Paul, Another good day out

Mon, 2011-06-27 09:47

Hi Paul, Another good day out by the sounds and then topped off with an Eagles win. Can you explain what venting a fish is when releasing it and how to perform it. Is this the release of the air from the swim bladder by piercing it ?

No when a fish comes up and

Mon, 2011-06-27 19:55

No when a fish comes up and is swollen the air has entered the gut cavity and i use a needle to release the air from the gut cavity .from what I have seen the air in the fish when blown up hard Paralizes the fish and it just floats away.I have never seen a fish float on the top or float to the bottom after venting. they swim of strong . .I Have been venting fish for 30years and was shown the proper way when I was young. Please don't try venting fish . If you go in the wrong place the fish will pobably die use a release weight .Some people say venting shouldn't be done at all .I have caught the same fish three times and vented it three times and its stilll alive and well .

Agree with Paul, release

Mon, 2011-06-27 20:07

Agree with Paul, release weight is best for 99percent of people. I researched this a while ago and recapture rates Definately supported release weight over venting. Paul is obviously an expert in this field so I think we leave venting to Paul and the rest of us use the release weight until research shows otherwise.

Nice stuff Paul.
