Fishingban

Ru mor is they are thinking of extending the ban for 2 to ten years as stocks have not improved asmuch as first thought they would..

Surprised, not in the least.

 If they thought the stock

Mon, 2026-08-03 08:54

If they thought the stock was going to improve enough in 1 year the scientists need to get another job.

It was a pollitical move to not get a huge uproar and lose voters. Nothing more.

If fish stocks are so

Mon, 2026-08-03 12:21

If fish stocks are so threatened, why are they still allowed to be caught from shore ?

The drone fishos are killing it up and down the coast on those rare and endangered pink snapper !

Expectations unknown

Mon, 2026-08-03 21:23

At this stage anything seems pure speculation.

It would have been useful to get some outline from the Minister of what the 2 year ban hoped to achieve, in terms of the stock  population profile rather than a vague "stock recovery" spiel. I would have liked to see the stock recovery modelled quantitatively and published. Never provided by Fisheries to the public as far as I'm aware. Seems to me that if the ban's focus was to allow more fish to participate in spawning last year and this, then we'd expect to see the resulting cohort reach legal size and first spawning around 5 years after. Not sure you'll see an stock recovery signal at 1-2 years, other than hopefully a very large cohort of juveniles ocming through, or not. Seemed to me there were heaps of iundersized pinkies before the ban anyway. Other than that I can't see what the ban was supposed to achieve in 2 years other than be some sort of circuit breaker to allow new rules to be introduced later and provide a sympathy action in parrallel with the removal of commercial licences. All politics. Meanwhile, the pinkies were and still seem to be thriving. Last week I was catching and releasing more size pinkies than skippy, floating small squid strips on the light gear in 8m. Hopefully in a year's time I can keep a couple, or at least 1.

 Where did this rumour come

Tue, 2026-08-04 06:41

Where did this rumour come from? Source? Sounds like BS to me

Hezzy is the best person for feedback regarding the current ban as from what he said to me Dhuies wiil have had two spawning cycles by the time they re open it.

In my speculative mind when they do open it it will be very restrictive as they'll try to mitigate upsizing etc. How they do that remains to be seen.....

This is a quote from an ABC article posted 3 Dec 2025:

"There will also be a 21-month ban on people recreationally fishing for demersal species from boats until September 2027, after which Ms Jarvis said some key breeding grounds would remain closed for up to 10 years."

is too BJ. That's where they place the baited cameras when collecting data.

Everyone I know that does 30 to 40 meter dives say all the dive spots have good numbers of dhues on them. Good sized ones at that. Also seeing heaps of big baldies. Anyway time will tell.

They have stuffed it up from

Sat, 2026-08-08 06:00

They have stuffed it up from the get go.

Should have kept it at 2 fish per person with no more than 2 dhuie per boat.  Now everyone suffers. If the ban is extended more there will be more tackle stores going down.

More boats will be heading north and soon that will suffer as well.
