FREO L/B REPORT. BALLOONS AND BOATS!
So i went to my favourite metro rockwall for an all nighter 3 nights ago. I arrived at around 4:30pm and set a balloon out with a 40cm tailor i caught the night before. i had 2 other mates with me who also had a balloon out each. within 20 minutes i had my first run, my brother was holding the rod and he set the hook straight away but no hook up. we bought the balloon back in and there was a distinctive bite mark on the shoulder of the tailor, missing the 10/0 mustards bu less than a centimetre.
afterwards i set out my balloon again with a similar size tailor and waited for about 3 hours without a single run, at this time i decided to bring my balloon back in, as did my two mates. to my suprise, my bait was gone and all that was left was the tailor head, and my mate had a baby hammerhead (dead) on the end of his line, who was probably too small to set the drag off.
i decided to give my balloon a rest while i fished for some bait, i ended up with 2 sized tailor and a 40cm snook. after a few hours around 1:00am i set my balloon out again with a 30cm tailor, and within 10 minutes i had a run. i picked my rod up and set the hooks, and thought to myself "S*&t it got away again, so i bought my balloon back in again, but about 20m out i felt some head shakes and knew i was still on, so i told my brother to get the gaff and we landed a 1.1m blacktip.
after the first shark, i set my balloon out again with the snook. and within 10 minutes again another run, this time when i set the hook i knew it was a lot larger than the previous shark. it started peeling my 50lbs braid off my tekota800 and it slowley stopped as i tightened the drag, however at this point i saw a boat comming from the left and just knew i was gunna have trouble. my brother and i, along with other fishermen at the rockwall were waving and shouting at the boat, but to our dissapointment, it drove straight through my line and snapped it instantly.
soo, after a all nighter all i had to show for it was a little blacktip, which i made fish and chips with the following day.
damn boats!

That shark looks
That shark looks mouthwatering on the plate. Pity about the inconsiderate boater. Unfortunately some people just dont realise better, or worse, actively dont care.
At least you had a bit of action and landed one shark though.

Unlucky mate,I have terrible
Unlucky mate,
I have terrible luck with baloons, more often than not reel in a half eaten bait, never seem to get a hookup. I also wonder how you know if a fish grabs the bait and swims towards you, not gonna hear drag or anything? Pretty much given up on baloons.
Which mustads are u using? I just started using the hoodlums a little while ago for live herring, not as sharp as the gamas but a nice strong hook. Apparently they make a 12/0 in the hoodlum as well which is meant to be great (bigger and stronger) but I cant find it anywhere.
Tasty lookin feed there

Gama's do their live bait
Gama's do their live bait range which is pretty similar in shape and thickness to the hoodlums (but with that gama sharpness). They come up to 12/0 in size.

I usualy like to use circle
I usualy like to use circle hooks becasue the sharks tend so hook themselfs, but on this occasion i used the mustard kirby 10/0. and yeh, i've always wondered how you would know u had a fish if it swam towards you! and another thing i hate about ballooning, u always wonder if u still have bait. if u wind it in with no bait you think to urself, what a waste of time, and if u bring it back with bait u have to set the balloon out again, its a lose, lose situation. thats why i tend to use solid and fresh baits so they stay on the hook.

Yea I know what you mean
Yea I know what you mean about the lose lose situation! One benefit of sliding baits is you generally get a good indication from the rod if u get pickers or a run towards you.
Really want to make the switch to circle hooks, tried once and missed a couple of runs, just havent got the confidence to try it again. Might wait till the next exmouth trip when i know theres no shortage of fish and I wont be so devo if it doesnt work out then ill give em a go.

Cast sinker as far as you
Cast sinker as far as you can, Then a clip attatches to your line and the bait slides down your line. Best done with about 30lb mono.

all the info you need to start with... gotta make your own sinkers here though the ones in the shops are no good for sliding anything bigger than maybe a herring

yeh this year has been pretty productive. between myself and 2 other mates we had caught baby tigers and larger tigers, hammerheads, bronzies, and loads of blacktips. and another species of shark that looks kinda like a blacktip but without the black tips LOL.

Bronzies can have the darker
Bronzies can have the darker colourings as well. The black tips you are describing may actually be bronzies. Was surprised when I found this out myself too.
