Galv hot dip gero? Exmouth?

I am wanting to service my trailer as its seen better days

however my problem is that I'm in carnarvon and I'm almost certain there is no where to get my trailer dipped in galv here in town.

im planning to push my boat off onto tyres in the coming week or so and wondering if there is anywhere in gero or exmouth I can get my trailer galv'd after it's been sandblasted.

will be a pain towing the trailer but unfortunately don't have much other option

unless anyone has any other ideas for rust protection after it has been sandblasted

thanks for any help

 Talk to a galvaniser before

Talk to a galvaniser before you sand blast it. Think you will find the acid bath they do before dropping it in the zinc bath will remove rust, old galv, paint etc. could save some time and money.

Double check I could be wrong

If it's painted or has thick

Mon, 2015-07-27 08:36

If it's painted or has thick rust sections then you will need to blast. If already galved then there will be a charge for removal of the existing. But worth the effort if keeping for the long term. What about using a transport company?

Just googled, not looking good. I would have thought so though being the big port it is. You might have to go metro.

 no there isnt, but Onesteel

Mon, 2015-07-27 09:12

no there isnt, but Onesteel transport smaller items to Perth for gal at a VERY reasonable price.
Trailer, you will have to take it to Perth.

Best bet is prearrange and they sometimes will do it in a couple of days.
Strip it, chuck it on a car trailer otherwise you'll be stripping it in their carpark!

Heavy rust needs to be mechanically removed (blast grind, wire wheel)

Do you have a ball park figure on the price for a 18ft trailer?

Done by weight

Mon, 2015-07-27 09:25

They charge by weight of the item to be galvanised.  From memory the last thing I had galvanised was $6/kg but don't quote me.  Ring a galvaniser or two in Perth for an estimate.

if you get it blasted first

Mon, 2015-07-27 09:30

if you get it blasted first then you will only be charged for galvanising. As said done by weight +5% usually.

 BIG problem with blasting a

Mon, 2015-07-27 15:18

BIG problem with blasting a box section trailer is...

If it needs blasting outside, then whats it like inside where you can neither see or blast?

Build an aluminium one and put it on your running gear.
Thgats what Im doing at the moment, speak to Skipjack about cost etc to get frame bent up

The point I was making Rob

Mon, 2015-07-27 19:00

The point I was making Rob is that if it was painted on the outside then will need blasting. If it's badly rusted inside then you might as well scrap it and start again. Should be able to shine a torch as most RHS trailers are open ended to give you an indication.

 thanks sunshine, i had

Mon, 2015-07-27 12:53

thanks sunshine, i had already called them before you posted that.

for anyone wanting to know, they charge $150 per metre of the trailer to be acid bathed and then hot dipped in galv.
So for my trailer approximately 6m long would cost me around the $1000 mark.
Then with new rollers, tow hitch and other bits and bobs i would estimate it all to cost about the $2500 mark.

Have done some calling around this morning and a decent brand trailer starts from the $7000 mark so the re galv option might be a goer. I would imagine i would get at least asnother 4-5 years from the trailer.

hope so anyway!

good to hear hartway have highly regarded work

cheers

I've used Hartways for a new trailer

Mon, 2015-07-27 13:55

Built a heavy boat trailer myself a few years ago, they did the gal, certainly no complaints. If there is more than the thinnest film of rust you will need to have it blasted, and have regard for how much "meat" is left. Be aware that a "few spot" outside, assuming the trailer is built from hollow section, can be a complete cancer inside, and you can't blast inside a section anywhere that is away from the ends. I bough one once, just a spot underneath, turned into a big hole inside 12  months. if it is built from solid beam, easier to evaluate.

If the running gear is OK

Mon, 2015-07-27 14:04

Have you thought of just having the basic trailer made - Chivers did that for me after I found that the rust was far far worse than expected at a cost of around $4000 including putting all the running gear back on. Might at least be worth a call to them and support the sponsors as well.

 I would check with hartways

Mon, 2015-07-27 18:27

I would check with hartways as they take a truck to bunbury twice a week so it is quite likely they go to gero.
