I agree I would prefer to tow a Mako to shore rather than bring it on board.
"Dead" makos have a reputation of coming back to life, I remember an article (poss modern fishing etc) approx 20 years ago where some blokes were shark fishing off NSW and caught a large mako. They were out near the cont. shelf and towed it approx 15 km before they deceided it was long dead and brought it aboard so they could make some more speed to get back to port. The DEAD mako then proceeded to come back to life and thrash around biting anything it could get its teeth into, ended up biting the battery and destroying it to the point they had to call for help and get a tow. The guys were climbing all over the cabin to get away from the thing. Could have been nasty......
PS if you do chop a sharks head off never, never stick your hand into its mouth (you have to be stupid anyway wouldn't you), if you touch a nerve on the roof of its mouth its jaws clamp shut with a fair force even if long dead..
Heading over to Streaky Bay from Adelaide this weekend for some bluefin tuna fishn, weathers looking good and I can't wait (thats why I'm on this site and not working, shhhh). :-)
The day I go to Streaky and can't catch fish is the day I give up fishn (well maybe) Is a top spot and I try to get there at least once a year. Heading back over to Smoky bay (next bay about 70km north from Streaky) in April again with my boat for a few weeks. Just going for 2-3 days this weekend while the tuna are still running. Have just bought a new High def video camera and hope to get some good video, though is going to be harder as my mate has just pulled out of the trip and I was counting on him healping out with the shooting (video that is) will see how I go and post some clips at a later date.
Had a pearler of a day last year and weather is looking good again when I'm there (its been blowing a bit lately).
Hey Paul, where is Streaky Bay in relation to Port Agusta. I might be looking to head over to that area soon for work and just having a look now at the fishing potential. Have already checked out Wyalla and i am sure there is more areas around there.
Port Augusta (south aust) is at the very top of Spencer gulf on the eastern side of Eyre Peninsula and as you probably know Whyalla is about an hour or so South of there. Streaky Bay is on the other (western side) of Eyre Peninsula approx 397km (by my map) from Pt Augusta - almost directly west from Port Augusta. Streaky is about 110km south of Ceduna which is at the south aussie side of the Great Aust bight. If thats too confusing better grab a map of south aust.
Spencer gulf has good snapper and king george fishing, particulary from Whyalla. Port Augusta is known for its big kingfish near the hot water outlet at the power station.
If you feel like a drive the west coast of eyre peninsula (port lincoln to ceduna and even further west into the Great Aust Bight) has Tuna at this time of year and large salmon, snapper, Nannygai, Mulloway (particularly off the surf beaches towards the bight such as the dog fence etc). Also get the odd Sampson and kingfish (more towards march april) as well. also king george to 50cm+ on the western side. Spencer gulf is good but the western side of Eyre Peninsula is better.
Boat always helps but if your restrcited to land and want to know where to head feel free to give me a yell for suggetions. I know some good landbased spots particularly around streaky.

Being a mako's lunch
Being a Mako's lunch would not be on my wish list. They were a long way offshore when it happened.

Hi YA, I saw it on the news
Hi YA,
I saw it on the news tonight. Couldn't believe the bit about having to cut the shark's head off to get it off the guys leg.
I remember an old mate of mine always said that of all fish, the mako was the one he would never bring into the boat.
Cheers.
