GPS units flush mounted? Tournament 2000 Opinions
Submitted by Blacked Out on Mon, 2013-07-22 21:34
Hi Guys,
I am looking at mounting a Lowrance gps/depth sounder flush mount to the dash. Has anyone had problems with them getting stolen? or is it best to take the safe option and mount them on the bracket?
Secondly any opinions on a tournament 2000 blue water?
Cheers

My first boat I mounted it
My first boat I mounted it flush in the dash, but figured I had made a big mistake.
My next boat I have it on a bracket. I have a second power lead and a small 12v battery at home. I can hook up the unit on the table, delete & sort tracks, enter way points and also keep in touch with using it. Have not been out much lately.
Also you can change the screen angle while in the boat if the setting sun is behind you & you cant see the screen.
Apart from all that you can remove it from the boat when not in use to stop theft.

I had mine bracket mounted
I had mine bracket mounted for security reasons. Takes no time to slot in and is adjustable for when I'm standing driving, sitting driving or at the back of the boat

Garmin 5012
i got a garmin 5012 on my 2100 tournament that fills the flush mount area nicely, I think its the same space on the 2000.
i never gave much thought to it geetting stolen though.
be a massive pain but your boat insurance should cover that.
For advise on the 2000, the 2100 walkaround is the same hull and is a very good riding boat.
let me know if you want any finer details about it.

Depends on where you store
Depends on where you store the boat and where you may go on holidays (where it will be overnight on trips), if parking in the front yard or accessible I'd personally go the bracket mount so you can take it out when you need to.
Also recommend you check the Ins. Policy. if in the front yard theft may not be covered as it's not considered to be secured etc. depending on the wording. Other thing is if its stolen you might get another via insurance but the bastard thieves will have your spots too (make sure you back them up at least).
Also check the item limit as if you have a $2,000 sounder/gps you may only be covered for 1,500
For example one policy states "we do not cover"
"For theft from your boat of personal effects, fishing gear, Dive Equipment, water ski equipment and tools unless there is physical evidence of violent and forcible entry into a lockable part of your boat"
It's possible a sounder may be construed as a tool and/or fishing gear and if your cabin is not locked/lockable you may have no claim. On the other hand if it is flush mounted it may be considered a part of the boat and thus covered. Best to check with your insurer via email and get the reply in writing first. That way they have no right to refuse a claim.

Looking at it another way
I had the Lowrance hds flush mounted in my previous boat. I secured the unit with bolts and nyloc nuts. Had the boat for two years sitting in the driveway of the front of the house. Never a problem.

Flush mounted pros; nice &
Flush mounted pros; nice & neat, looks the goods & doesn't impede vision. Cons - I have to lock the friggin cab & get bloody paranoid, if I ever wanted to upgrade I could be making bigger holes or plugging them up!
