Hale road reef reports?
Submitted by dant on Thu, 2013-06-13 12:30
Gday All,
Well the time has come to finally take the mrs out on the open ocean for a fish (started straight of with im going early!!!!) so was going to try and go out wide to scare the sht out of her so she has no interest in joining me again but no joy - she wants to stay in close, il have to figure something else out.
Anyway - was thinking about just hitting up hale road reef, anchoring up just outside the reef system and burleying the shit out of the water.
Just wondering if anyone else has had anyluck out there lately?
Thanks again.

I haven't been out to Hale Rd
I haven't been out to Hale Rd myself for a while. But i've heard reports of good fish. A few good sized sambo's, snapper, and Dhu's getting around. Hopefully I'll get the boat in the water in the next few weeks and find out for myself.
if you head out there, post up a report.
cheers

a mate was there yesterday, and the skippy were that thick you couldnt get anything else ,good ones too up to 50cm so it should be fun at least , they were blown away a few times on the light gear and 105mm flick baits by probably sambos/snapper. cheers

Report
Alright gents - for the report.
Finally got the mrs out of bed, Got to Hale road reef around 7.45 yesterday and burleyed up, through everything in there i could find from the night before. before we knew it the water was thick with Skippy, the mrs had a ball most of the day pulling up some good size skippy and wrasse, kept her busy.
bit of mixed bag during the dayt, got a variety of stuff, ranging from BA (the mrs), to Gurnard, the usual fkn wrasse, dropped a nice Pinky at the edge of the boat which i was most dark at, and couple of big bust ups with Sambos that were on roids, as usual you hook the biggest one on the lightest gear, got a glimps of him and it was a very big Sambo, couldnt care less that it was hooked, just went about its businees until it snapped.
got a couple of suprises with me pulling up a monster rude cuttle fish, which kept spitting water at me until i got him off, and my mate pulled up with looked like a western red scorpion fish tangled with an email (fk knows how that happened)
we were on our last half hour before it was time to shoot off, we were hoping to land a Sambo by the end of the day so everything went in to burley up the water for one last chance to attract one, next thing you know out of knowhere 2 of them show up, out came the Sambo shuffle, scrambling around the boat trying to find a gang or a hook of any sort to lob a floater out there, next thing you know we are on, my mate hooks one with his 1952 Shimano dust catcher (broke his overhead last wk, so raided the old mans shed) we were pissing our selfs to see what i thought was smoke at first , but dust and moths shit flying everywhere from this reel as the Sambo took off, i dont know how but we landed it not to mention the make shift rig that consisted of 2 rusty hooks.
anyway - was a great day out, weather was senstational and water cyrstal clear, couple of photos below.
cheers alll again Dan

Muldy got a bag of red and white wrasse so he was happy. got monstered by some big sambos but thet all got off ''Phew. '' I must get my grand son the goat down there soon, might have to put a lanyard on his rod, chucked some more poppers on the way home,no luck, sit back tonight and watch the footy smash and crush I hope

yeah got some 80 pnd braid
yeah got some 80 pnd braid aswell to assist, i found they were picky in what they were taking - would take a few circles before one of them took the bait, but they were fairly casual about it.

Woulda been beaut out there
Woulda been beaut out there today unc. Iv gotten dhus and kgs just on first light there, usually get dhus straight away when we get there at 3, sound up the fish and drop on them, then get the burley workin for the snapper. I get the dhus on 5inch gulp shads or my gun bait, a lunds squid hood with a mulie inside on snelled 5/0 circles unweighted. The snapper are hit and miss for me, another bloke that joins me out there has done good some mornings, retrieving the boat at 7 bagged out on decent snapper, I havent had much success yet. We went for a sunset session last week and it wasnt long after the sun went down before I got my first dhu, just gota be in the right spot, which sometimes means pullin the pick and resetting afew times once you suss the current and the wind makes its mind up, dont need to be on a lump either, we fish on good ground that is pretty much flat reefy bottom but the important thing is what is on the sounder when we get there. The sambos are out there to smash the skippy, so put a hook in one and drop it over. Be nice to them, let them run and increase the drag gradually, if you can, up anchor or attach a float to the rope so you can throw it over when your on and you can return to your burleyed up spot. I might take the boy on sat and try to get him on a 'small' sambo lol.

He went ok on a tuna a few weeks ago, but might need a bit more drag, like uncle said, I think a lanyard will be used haha. Haha, hes sittn here lickin a 9v battery, tryin to get me to do it, hes hard as haha. You goin up to seabird this weekend? Wouldnt think the little blow wouldav taken much sand away.

Yeh, I refer to the whole
Yeh, I refer to the whole area south of the south cardinal marker, fair bit of ground. Its ideal to head there at night cos once youre past the marker, theres no more shallow reef for swells to pick up.

I dont reckon my little tub would make it far out of the marina in a 5m swell

you would be surprised
Inside 3 mile is fine and you just have to avoid certain patches south of the marker.
Plenty of crew anchor at sealy's for a paddle when its on. I have turned around once when I didn't want to anchor in the channel cause of the rouge shutdowns. You see boats anchored on the inside of the right hander getting smashed without anyone on board, surfers see/do a bit different I think

Im no experienced fisho by
Im no experienced fisho by any means but thats what Iv learnt about the area in the last year. I use nitro saltwater jig heads, about 3/8 is heavy enough to keep contact with the bottom when the current is up, go lighter when its not. I think I use 3/0 for 5" shads and 5/0 for the 7" but I dont use the 7" much anymore. Squidgy 110mm flick baits in the pilly colour with smaller, lighter jig heads work good for skippy, and have caught a few rat sambos with these too. I still use bait coz it still catches fish, and flickn a placcy adds my chances when im waitn for a bait to get hit. Its hard to target dhus and pinks at the same time. You kinda wana let the pinks run but you dont want to give the dhus much coz they can brick you in their cave. It can be worth while gettin up bloody early, I like having the roads and ramp to myself aswell

cheers Timo - we didnt have
cheers Timo - we didnt have much luck on the plastics last time we went out there, nothing was interested. Sambos took the floater mulie and skippy raided the squid.
understand what you mean by caves - rekon we have hooked onto a couple of dhuies in the past there that that dive straight into a cave. smart fkas, they head into them within seconds.
