Historian Nicholas Rogers, exploring the origins of Halloween, notes that while "some folklorists have detected its origins in the Roman feast of Pomona, the goddess of fruits and seeds, or in the festival of the dead called Parentalia, it is more typically linked to the celtic festival of Samhain or Samuin (pronounced sow-an or sow-in)", which is derived from Old Irish and means roughly "summer's end". A similar festival was held by the ancient Britons and is known as Calan Gaeaf (pronounced kalan-geyf).

never been out door to door trick or treat or egg-ing anyone's car.. but it seem cute that the kids get to dress up in those 'scary' dress running out on the streets. dont get me wrong.. i dont like kids.. esp those who cant talk but its fun watching them fight esp if its over a pi of candy... wahahahaha...

seen a few old ladies down the road when i came home earlier with kids, very convincing witch outfits too, all the chucked on extra was a witches hat lol.

I used to think that way
I used to think that way (yanky crap) but the last couple of days i thought the kids are having fun playing dress up etc and it fosters a strong sense of communtiy for them to be walking around and meeting friendly people, never heard off eggs on cars before but i would expect that in the crime ravvaged north of the river,,our kids are good kids down here
I managed to lie low as i seen them coming up the driveway but i hope others did the right thing by them,,,

If I lived in your street I'd probably egg your car too jeff. Not because you didnt give me lollies though. Halloween gives peolple the opportunity to blame it on the younger trick or treaters. I had a cpl of parents come round this afternoon to ask if it was ok if there kids could come by. No harm in that. It was around 20 yrs ago when i was a kid so cant see it dying off anytime soon. Mate unless you wear stubbies, dunlop pluggers, king gee shirts, only watch kingswood country and shit pure vegimite Id so most of your life is full of american crap anyway.
