I wouldn't say always but if the weather allows it's worth making the effort... it really depends what you want though, I always found reds were a lot more abundant out further but we could almost always get good trout/rankins/snapper/bluebone in close.
Adam. like Jay said you get your trout,macks,cod etc in closer but if you get out wide 50m+ theres alot more reds. none of the the reds from this trip were worth a photo

How did ya go with sharks? Last couple times I've been out wide we had sharks circling the boat waiting for a free feed.
