Has anyone experienced this before chasing Salmon?

Hi All,

I was at South Mole this evening.

I was casting straight and minding my own business. the spacing between myself and person left of me about 5 rocks and so forth, except between person 1 and 2

For example,

(Person 1) 2 rocks (person 2) 5 rocks (Person 3) 5 rocks (Me)

(Person 1) caught a salmon and could not control his salmon with his rod, his salmon went to the right, ran towards my line, tangling my line with his.

Has anyone had this experience before? In the end i had to cut my line with the lure as it was clutch under the rocks.

Quite Pissed at the moment.

Clutch under the rocks

Sun, 2016-04-24 00:25

Is that a typo and you mean it became stuck under the rocks, or have you gone home and got pissed literally. If you have I can understand why, that's a pretty drastic action to cut your lure off.

I think it should be up to the guy who has the salmon on to solve the problem, and yes I understand that the fish will go where it wants and he has not much control over that but could he have got the salmon up without the cutting of some ones line.

 Unless the bloke fishing

Sun, 2016-04-24 06:19

Unless the bloke fishing beside you has 60lb line and the drag locked off, he has little control of the fish going left or right....

Common sense would suggest getting lines out of the water if someone has a fish on within close proximity.

Yep so in other words it is up to you as a switched on angler to get your line out of his way so he can enjoy landing his fish. What did you expect would happen?

Clearing your line when he

Clearing your line when he hooked up would have done the trick, or instead of cutting your line just free spool it till he landed his fish?

 This could've been a whole

Sun, 2016-04-24 09:29

This could've been a whole lot messier at ammo! Just go somewhere that isnt as easily accessible or you have to walk a little and you'll have salmon to yourself. Pretty sure if you know where to look there is salmon from hillaries all the way round the south coast to say ummm sydney. A salmon that you put effort in for is better than one spun off the moles or ammo.

 When hooked up my crew

Sun, 2016-04-24 17:17

When hooked up my crew usually  wind in and get out of the way.... once fish is safely under control the rest cast back out to get the next hook up.

Same goes for fishing next to strangers... if someone hooks up we get out of the way... nothing worse than losing someone's fish.

fish on !!!!!

Sun, 2016-04-24 17:34

Everywhere I've fished...the age old rule..

Someone hooks up onto a decent fish

Everyone else pulls in......

Ie beach full of tailor fishermen someones rod doubles over on something big everybody cranks in,  and gets out of the way.

never experienced what you have but when i see alot of people fishing at a crouded area i usually avoid it, nothing worse then getting tangled up with someone else and loosing your lures

I was at south mole this morning and it was packed as, so i said stuff it and went to north mole and still managed to land plenty of salmon

person 1 and 2 had hook up at the same time.

So even though i am about 10 rocks away, thats close?, knowing that the rocks are quite huge by contention.

nvm. next time i will get a kayak, offshore fishing is still the best.

just wind in..

Tue, 2016-04-26 08:28

Karak, when it's crowded on the rocks and someone hooks up alongside you or close to you it is always best just to wind your line in and wait until he has his fish under control and then get into it. If you were just using some gang hooks and a mullie then leave it out as they are cheap to replace and then you won't lose an expensive lure. If rock fishing is all you can access then there has to be some compromises..
Maybe have two rods mate, one with your lure on and one with an unweighted mullie on as your bait. if someone hooks up on salmon next to you, wind in your lure and then cast out your baited rod and wait for the action to kick off.

good luck.

 Lol had the exact opposite

Sun, 2016-04-24 23:14

Lol had the exact opposite happen to me today. Had a salmon on, pulling it in. My mate who is still learning thought he might cast out into the school but ended up casting at a 90 degree angle right over my line. But was on the beach so easier to untangle while fighting and eventually landing the fish...

Also north mole is a great destination for fishing but often get less experienced anglers or some that you feel are trying harder to piss you off than catch a fish. So some instances like that can happen so gotta learn to just go with it and try not to express too much anger lol.

Anyway I reckon go to your local Big W and get some $5 metals in blue colour from there. They are alright and no one really gets bothered if they lose those lures in that way because they don't break the bank. Unless it is the only school of the day and you have to spend time re-rigging your line, then I would get a bit mad

I always take my scissors

Mon, 2016-04-25 05:50

I always take my scissors with me in case there are any pesky fishos who hook a good fish and it comes into my territory.

Snip.....problem solvered. No wasting time pulling my line in, I can keep fishing and drinking my VB and I also save Ol mate some time as he does not have to worry about cleaning any fish.

North Mole ettique

Tue, 2016-04-26 13:53

Was at the North Mole Saturday morning on the inside and had no problems. They guys around us all cooperated well pulling in line when hooked up and even assisting in landing the fish with gaffs and nets. Was a pleasure being down there with so many good fishos. Even when multiple hookups the co operation between anglers was excellent.

Made for a great morning
