Hats of to the Ocean Reef Crayers

Was the busiest I have seen the ramp during cray season EVER.
This queue went 200m out to sea.
No agro, everyone did the right thing and the line flowed smoothly.
Probably because everyone out there are serious fishermen/women so there is no dicking around at the ramp.
We got a bag today, how is everyone else going?

Nearly a punch up at Safety Bay
One of the boys here at work said the ramp was quite congested due to a neighbouring ramp undertaking civils. Some clown jumped the que with the excuse "I'm in a hurry". Nearly went for a swim apparently!!

ramp etiquette
that is how it should work. Iwas in a well known north west fishing town this year in the same situation with all waiting patiently in line for over 1 hour to retrieve at the single lane ramp. Until 3 skippers from well known charter boats put their deckies on shore to jump the long que. They were rude pricks saying its car right of way at all ramps around australia. How do you think they would have faired at OR this morning

At a ramp like this in ocean
At a ramp like this in ocean reef it is hard to jump the queue by putting someone on land to then retrieve the car as the marina itsself is not big enough to then motor around and to ensure you have ample room to be able to drive your boat up due to the ramps being close together it only take a boat on each ramp/floating pontoon to block your run up up. Although ramps such as Two rocks that behaviour of having someone jump off on the pier then to go and get the car in my books is fine. it takes me no longer then 15 sec to get my boat on and drive away (a lot of thanks to boat catch for this timing though)

It's amazing how well it
It's amazing how well it works really, could you imagine if that was a summer weekend with half the boats being weekend warriors? Would be chaos!!
It gets busier and busier at ocean reef every cray season, and with all the great Cray report catches form there this year its gonna be even busier next season.
Personally i think there is twice as many people out from there this year then last.

Right of way
Afraid to say but the 3 skippers are correct when saying the trailers have right of way at ramps. There is no other way it can function? (With in reason of coarse)

If that happened today it
If that happened today it would have been a bloodbath
Surely lining up at sea then getting your car when you hit the jetty is the right way to go. Once you hit the jetty there is usually 2 or 3 boats in front. One is retrieving and the other 2 trailers are in line waiting.
To drop a decky at the jetty and then push in front of other patient decent boaters is just asking for a flogging

Yes. The order that boats cue
Yes. The order that boats cue at finger jetty sets the order the trailers follow. It's logical, simple, and works well.

argument
I have heard and understand the car right of way argument but don't agree with it. Its just me and the wife in the boat and she cant drive a manual car or reverse a trailer or drive the boat and this is where that argument falls apart. The other method works better in my opinion as I don't have any other choice.

I pulled up behind four
I pulled up behind four boats this morning on the finger jetty and when i came back with the car the guy in front of me still hadnt shown up with his trailer. Potentially he had much further to walk than i did. I just hung back from the front of the queuing lane and he eventually came arounf me and took his place in the reversing bay.
No agro.
Everyome has to chill and be patient.
Having said that, dont ever try to push in front me!

Agree
Agree with you randall. Patients and courtesy are the key but can be in short supply at times. After years of boating I would have to say that the vast majority employ the boat right of way method but there are still a minority rightly or wrongly that insist on the car right of way. In my experience that method just causes agro and problems.

I was at Leewin 2 weeks ago
I was at Leewin 2 weeks ago and pulled into the jetty and my brother jumped out to grab the rope while I went to grab the car. As I pulled into the ramp area some young fella reversed across the lane he was in and backed his boat into the water in front of my boat and I then had to wait 5 minutes while he launched his boat and another 5 mins while he parked his car and walked back to the ramp.
I managed to calm myself down and casually suggested maybe he wait for a boat that's just hit the jetty to be pulled out first but it seemed like my advice was lost on him although he looked like the typical 19y old who's parents could afford to buy him a $50k boat so maybe he didn't give a toss.
I learned a valuable lesson though that's probably good practice in any case. As soon as you hit the jetty always move your boat up to the ramp even if there's no one behind you.
Officially off the Pies bandwagon

nearly a punch up a peron this morning but fair enough a white boat with red stripes caught and photo'd pulling other boats pot, they are just very lucky fisheries turned up otherwise could have been a blood bath.

I see no problem with
I can't see a problem with retrieving from the launching lane, provided, that there is no one waiting to launch their boat.
If it's not being used and there is no one being inconvenienced why not.

Much quieter for us today
Much quieter for us today too, 7 keepers and 2 undersize. I also had 2 pots move off there marks a bit, which is the 1st time I've had pots move this season, which makes me think that the guys around me arnt doing very well either so decided to check and see if my pots were catching or not.
Is this the start of the end of whites in close? If I'm get low numbers tomorrow then I'm gonna start moving my pots around

Yeah interesting, maybe I'm just jumping to conclusions too quickly haha. Do you keep the Occys? They freak me out too much to touch them, we had one drop out of the pot into the boat the other day, I jumped up on the seat screaming like a girl trying to flick it back into the water with a fish landing net lol.

Yep definitely much quieter
Yep definitely much quieter today in terms of boats.
Crays still in numbers, got our 3 person bag with about 10 or 12 going back from 4 pots. Also had a nice occie too which was munching the biggest cray in the pot#$%#$@!%#@$. Got people round for dinner tonight so 8 crays on the dining table it is!!! :D
Was quite a few at the ramp today who did it tough, low numbers, gotta keep moving them pots about if numbers are below say 6 a pot.

Yeah we were one of those who had low numbers today in spots that previously done well and noticed less pots where mine were. Big shuffle of them tomorrow, plus all new fresh bait and going to scrub all the gunk off of them as well.

dont touch the gunk on the
dont touch the gunk on the pots, crays love it, looks and feels more natural. Clean your rope if its slimey, but leave the growth on the pots.
Back edge paul, find a drop off and a couple meters off, plenty still about.

Always hear conflicting
Always hear conflicting stories about the gunk on the pots, feeling more natural to the crays does make a lot of sense tho. Might leave it on there for now then and just move them around to try find a few more.
Cheers mate
